Kate Hoekstra

Connecticut Beach Flowers by Kate HoekstraHoekstra studied art at Hunter College, NY, but her real journey with painting began when she later studied drawing with the legendary Stephen Rogers Peck. From that point on, she admits, she's been a captive of representational art.

"Portraying recognizable objects in a fresh, painterly way is the challenge in contemporary representational painting. Going beyond the simply shocking, or clever, or even technically skillful, to produce a work which connects the viewer with his own recognizable and felt world in an honest way—is what I am after." she explained.

Featured Artist, May
Claudia Waters

The Glossy Ibis, by Claudia WatersWaters earned a BFA from Parsons School of Design and studied painting at the Art Students League and the Yard School of Art. She grew up in an artistic family: her mother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather all were painters.

The theme of the beaches of New England and their inhabitants is reminiscent of her childhood, where long, lazy summers were spent soaking up the sun, surf, and sand in the company of friends and family, seagulls and sand crabs. Her oil paintings capture specific moments of contemplation, discovery, freedom, and joy at the seashore: unobserved moments preserved.
