This month Geary Gallery is pleased to feature the marine paintings of contemporary artist Peter Layne Arguimbau, who has painted in the Flemish tradition for more than 40 years. These techniques come from a lifetime of experience recreating the Luminist tradition of the Dutch guilds in the Golden Age of painting. Like the work of the Flemish Masters, Layne Arguimbau's paintings have an extreme quality of light that is timeless. He first learned to paint when he was eight years old, as he spent hours watching his father, Vincent Arguimbau, a portrait painter in his studio in Darien, Connecticut. Simultaneously with his art training, Arguimbau interned with restorer, Pierro Manonni, trained at the Instituto del Restauro in Rome under Cesere Brandi where for ten years they replicated painting mediums from 15th & 16th Century manuscripts. Layne is known for his determination for finding the right painting medium, and during the past 40 years, has perfected his techniques of creating his own pigments. He has achieved stability using his own raw materials, and is now assembling his book, "The Invention of Oil Painting, a fresh look at the way painters painted from the Renaissance to the Present.” We encourage you to come view Arguimbau’s magnificent, vibrant marine paintings, which are being shown throughout the month of September. You can read more about him on his bio online, and to view his paintings, visit our online gallery.
This September, Geary Gallery is delighted to present the impressionistic paintings of Kim Muller-Thym. For the past ten years, Kim has painted exclusively in oils, and her painting style is directly inspired by what she sees and feels in the open air. Growing up in a farm in Maryland, Kim always loved nature and the outdoors. In 2004, she moved to Old Saybrook on the Connecticut River, and she has immersed herself in the beauty of New England’s shoreline, painting seascapes and landscapes. Her strong brush strokes convey an appreciation for color, light and the effects of weather. Kim has sold her work in several one person shows and in galleries in New York City, Maryland, Virginia and Connecticut. Her work has also been exhibited in numerous juried shows in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Arizona. Her background is eclectic. She earned her BA in German literature, and her MFA in applied psychology. For twenty years she was a ceramics artist and studied a year in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She also studied art and was a graphics instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Prior to that, she was a journalist writer, editor and art director for numerous magazines and newspapers. Returning to her passion for oil painting, she is most excited to return to a full-time career as an artist, and Geary Gallery is equally excited to be showcasing her work this month. We hope you come in and view her magnificent land and seascapes. You can read more about Kim Muller-Thym in her biography and view her artwork at our online gallery.
