All Eyes on Long Beach in the Bike and Ped World

All eyes in the bike and pedestrian advocacy and planning world will be on bike-friendly Long Beach beginning tomorrow, as several bike and ped conferences, retreats, summits, and meetings will be taking place.

The Alliance for Biking and Walking's Leadership Retreat will begin tomorrow and run through Monday at the Queen Mary, and LACBC will be sending several staffers to become better leaders and advocates, covering issues from engaging membership to running a successful campaign.

Pro Walk/ Pro Bike, the leading international conference on walking, bicycling, and creating great communities through Placemaking, takes place Monday through Thursday of next week. This conference covers over 100 workshops and panels on bike and ped issues from several angles.

In between these two major gatherings is the Safe Routes to School National Annual Meeting. Immediately following Pro Walk / Pro Bike is the National Women's Bicycling Summit, brought to you by the League of American Bicyclists.

We at LACBC would like to extend a warm welcome to all the advocates, community organizers, planners, government officials, and other folks that care about making their communities a better place to walk and ride who are visiting Long Beach!
ACTION ITEM: Help Pass the 3-Foot Passing Bill

Last week the California Legislature approved Senate Bill 1464, the 3-foot passing bill, and sent it to Gov. Jerry Brown for his signature.

Let Governor Brown know that you demand safety by sending a letter of support today!

You can also read the bill's current language of the bill here.
Rest in Peace, Jerico Culata

Our condolences to the family and friends of Jerico Culata, who died in last Friday's Critical Mass ride by the UCLA campus. He was 18 and from Los Angeles, and his family and friends are in our thoughts.

If you witnessed the crash, please contact West Traffic Division and provide an official statement at 213-473-0220.

The family is also looking for Jerico's bike, which was removed from the site following the crash. It is a white Leader 725. You can learn more about it on this Facebook group set up by his friends and family. If you have information about where his bike may be, contact the West Traffic Division at 213-473-0220.
Be on the Lookout for a Land Rover Involved in Topanga Hit and Run

This past Saturday after noon at around 12:13 PM, a cyclist was hit by a motorist at the intersection of North Topanga Canyon Blvd and Viewridge Road in Topanga Canyon. The cyclist is in the hospital and is being treated for injuries. We wish the rider a quick and speedy recovery.

Authorities are now looking  for a Land Rover with a missing headlight (no word on the color or year). If anyone has information about this hit and run, please contact the West Valley CHP station at 818-888-0980.
