Santa Monica Spoke Awarded Better Bicycling Community Grant for Bike Action Plan Outreach
Join LACBC
Congratulations to local chapter Santa Monica Spoke for being awarded a Better Bicycle Community Grant of $3,000 from Performance Bicycle and the Alliance for Biking and Walking!

To assist in the implementation of Santa Monica's newly adopted Bicycle Action Plan, Santa Monica Spoke will take the lead on grassroots community outreach. Working with community groups, neighborhood associations and merchant groups, SM Spoke will focus on two key bikeway projects: bicycle boulevards on the Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway, and protected bike lanes on Broadway.

Congrats also to the nine other local advocacy organizations who are making it safer to bike across the country. Read more on the Santa Monica Spoke blog.

City of Lights Program Branches out to become Multicultural Communities for Mobility
Join LACBC
After over 3 years as a successful and award-winning LACBC program addressing the needs of low-income cyclists in Los Angeles, City of Lights has branched out to form its own organization called Multicultural Communities for Mobility. Much like CicLAvia started as a sub-committee of LACBC to become the strong and successful non-profit it is today, MCM will become its own non-profit organization to expand its reach beyond cycling to cover transit and pedestrian issues in low-income communities of color.

We would like to thank and congratulate all of the volunteers that make City of Lights/MCM what it is today. We wish MCM the best of luck in continuing to provide communities of color with resources to fit their transportation needs, and we look forward to continuing to work with MCM to create a more inclusive bike movement.

MCM will be having its first fundraiser this month, and we encourage you all to enjoy good company, dancing, food, and more, all while supporting a good cause!
MCM

Thanks for Raising $10,000 in the CLIF Bar 2 Mile Challenge

We did it! In the month of July, not only did the Washington Area Bicyclist Association reach its goal of logging 10,000 trips this July, but LACBC and BikeWalk KC both walked away with $10,000 total to make up for past months.

In July, we all logged 15,048 bike trips!
Thanks to everyone logging miles, CLIF Bar, and WABA!

Continue to log your trips (up to 4 a day) at 2milechallenge.com this August, and help MassBike raise $10,000 to support bicycling in Massachusetts!

Fall CicLAvia on October 7 with New RouteCicLAvia
Join LACBC
CicLAvia is coming--even sooner than you expected! LA Streetsblog recently announced several changes for the upcoming CicLAvia, including the new date of Sunday, October 7 (previously, CicLAvia had been set for October 14, when the streets will now fill up with a space shuttle instead).

Other changes include a modified route with expansion to South LA, Chinatown, and Boyle Heights, and no spur to the bicycle district. CicLAvia will now reach the new Expo Line (via Figueroa) and reach several Gold Line stops in Boyle Heights in addition to its Red Line stops, making the next CicLAvia very accessible by light rail.

So mark your calendars, and bust out your bike, scooter, stroller, roller skates, pogo sticks, or walking/running/dancing shoes. Get ready for LA's biggest block party!

Los Fixie Riders: L.A. Latino Teens on Why They Prefer Fixed Gear Bikes
Los Fixie Riders

They are a ubiquitous sight in Los Angeles: fresh-faced teens riding around on their colorful fixed gear bikes. Why do these "fixies" appeal so much to teens, especially Latino teens? ColorLines asked local Latino teens and they credited everything from the design to the sense of community they bring.
