Adios, Alexis!

It is with a pannier of mixed emotions that we bid adieu to Alexis Lantz, our Planning and Policy Director of the past two years. Alexis first became involved with LACBC as a planning intern in Spring of 2009 where she worked with LACBC on the City of LA's first-ever bike and pedestrian count (and would again head up efforts in 2011). She later received the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Planning Association's Distinguished Leadership Award for a Student Planner in 2010. She joined the LACBC staff in the summer of 2010, where, among other things, she helped get the LACBC Regional Partnership off the ground, advocated for the passing and implementation of the LA Bike Plan, and has been a powerhouse in advocating for improved bike infrastructure in LA County.

Alexis will be continuing her work on active transportation planning and policy in LA County at the Department of Public Health with the PLACE program. She will continue staying involved with bike and ped advocacy as an LACBC member and a board member for both the California Bicycle Coalition and Los Angeles Walks.

We at LACBC will miss having her fun personality, professionalism, and savviness in our office but are excited that Alexis will still be applying her talents to making LA County a better place to bike and walk.

Thank you and best of luck, Alexis!

LACBC Leadership Meets for Strategy Retreat
Strategy Retreat
LACBC board and staff met over the weekend for an intense two-day strategy retreat facilitated by the Alliance for Biking and Walking. At the retreat, board and staff streamlined our short-term goals, long-term goals, and created an action plan to achieve these goals. Together we create a focused direction for the organization that we will share at an upcoming summit for the entire LACBC community.

LACBC would like to thank the leaders in bike advocacy who gave up their time to share their visions for LACBC during a special panel: Lupe Vela of Councilman Reyes's Office, April Economides of Green Octopus Consulting, Dave Snyder of the California Bicycle Coalition, Tafarai Bayne of CicLAvia and TRUST South LA, and Don Ward of Midnight Ridazz and Wolfpack Hustle.

Thanks to Jeremy Grandstaff and the Alliance for Biking and Walking for once again facilitating another LACBC retreat and helping us grow both as individual leaders and as an organization.

The food for this summit was donated by a few of our generous downtown eateries. Thanks to Pitfire Pizza (link) for the delicious pastas and salads, thank you LA Cafe for the coffee, bagels, and satisfying wrap sandwiches, and thanks to Local Leaf for the first-day coffee service.  We are so lucky to be surrounded by such great restaurants and cafes that not only provide amazing food using great ingredients but support LACBC's efforts at making Los Angeles County a better bike-able place to live.

Thanks to your help, we've logged over 8,000 bike trips now for the month of June in the 2 Mile Challenge!

For the June 2012 Challenge, every bike trip you log will raise $1 for LACBC, up to $10,000!

It's not too late to join the ride and propel us forward. Here's how:

  1. Head over to CLIF Bar's 2 Mile Challenge for the month of June.
  2. Create a login (or use your Facebook Account) by clicking "Sign In" at the top of the screen on the right hand side.
  3. You'll then need to log in again.
  4. Once you've logged in and finished some additional details of your profile, click on "Dashboard" at the top of screen.
  5. In order to log your rides/trips in manually, simply enter the number of miles covered in the field with the red background, click on "Log Miles" and that's it.
  6. Logged rides show up on the left side of your dashboard if you need to edit them.

You can also log your rides on your iPhone with the BioLogic BikeBrain app.

Please remember to log every ride, no matter what the length, this June and help us build a better, more bike-able LA County! You can log up to 4 a day. Spread the word via our Facebook event to all your friends.

3-Foot Passing Bill Passes Assembly Transportation Committee

Responding to the urging of hundreds of bicycling Californians and their allies, the Assembly Transportation Committee approved Senate Bill 1464, the 3-foot passing bill, by 9-3 at the State Capitol on Monday!

Thanks to everyone who sent in letters of support, the California Bicycle Coalition for leading this charge, and the author of SB 1464 Sen. Alan Lowenthal.

Props to Melissa Balmer from Women on Bikes SoCal in Long Beach, Bill Dullea from GJEL Accident Attorneys in Orinda, and Amy Lee from Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates for testifying so in support of the bill.

We're one step closer to making this bill a law!

Become a Neighborhood Bike Ambassador

The Neighborhood Bike Ambassador program is a new way for LACBC members & volunteers to work on neighborhood-scale projects and organize local support for bike projects and LACBC campaigns in the City of Los Angeles.

This new LACBC initiative is to support the implementation of the City of LA bicycle master plan. Neighborhood Bike Ambassadors will work on one of 5 City of LA area committees: the Valley, South LA, the Westside, Central LA, and the Eastside/Northeast LA. Neighborhood Bike Ambassadors will meet monthly starting in early fall 2012 and each area committee will generate a set of goals to pursue over the coming months.

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: Meet the Real Rydaz of South LA

The Real Rydaz | Subculture Club
The Real Rydaz | Subculture Club
Perhaps you've seen a crew of people riding tricked out bikes around Los Angeles wearing shirts that read "Real Rydaz" and wondered who made up this fun group.

This week, Streetsblog caught up with this group of riders mostly from South LA and touched upon the work the Real Rydaz have been doing to make South LA more bike-able and livable. This Sunday, they have organized the South LA Peace, Love, and Family Ride & Fair 2012a bike ride through historic South LA and a community event with music, food, vendors, services and more.

The Real Rydaz were also featured in a Subculture Club film earlier this month. Check it out, and learn more about this unique group in the bicycle community.
