LACBC/REI TU FAMILIA PSA

LACBC/REI Tu Familia PSA

In the spirit of our "Give Me 3" poster campaign, LACBC's City of Lights program, in conjunction with the LA Department of Transportation and R.E.I., have debuted LA's first-ever Spanish-language bike safety campaign. Perhaps you've seen some of the posters around town, as they'll be appearing at a bus shelter near you.

Designed by artist and LACBC volunteer Aaron Kuehn (he of bicycle typogram fame) with the guidance of day laborers and City of Lights volunteers over several months, the PSA reads "PRECAUCIN: Tu familia tambin usa la bicicleta" (in English: "CAUTION: Your family also rides bicycles") to remind everyone that people who ride bikes are your family (sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively), and family comes first. Your actions can put your family in danger, so be careful out there and share the road.

The poster was unveiled at today's CicLAvia and Spanish-Language Bike Safety PSA Press Conference in MacArthur Park with Mayor Villaraigosa and Councilmembers Huizar, Reyes, and LaBonge. You can view photos on our Facebook page.

You can learn more about the making of the print PSA by watching this behind the scenes video, directed by Jordan Melograna.

You can also view the accompanying video PSA, also directed by Jordan.

Thanks to LADOT, R.E.I., Aaron Kuehn, Jordon Melograna, and the many LACBC/City of Lights volunteers who have spent countless hours working on this campaign! And be on the lookout for these posters.
Glendale Safe & Healthy Streets Plan Awarded SCAG's Compass Blueprint President's Award

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and the City of Glendale were presented the Southern California Association of Governments 2012 Compass Blueprint top honor, the President's Award, for the Safe & Healthy Streets Plan which the City of Glendale and LACBC completed in the Spring of 2011. The award was presented during SCAG's Compass Blueprint Awards dinner on Wednesday, April 4, at the Bonaventure Hotel. LACBC's Colin Bogart joined Glendale Council Member Frank Quintero and Safe & Healthy Streets co-authors Mike Nilsson and Marc Stirdivant to accept the honor.

The Compass Blueprint Awards are presented in recognition of projects that demonstrate excellence and achievement in the four key elements of Compass Blueprint planning: Livability, Mobility, Prosperity and Sustainability.

"We're honored to be recognized and we're proud of the Safe & Healthy Streets Plan," says Colin Bogart. "Creating the plan was a unique and truly collaborative project that involved multiple city departments, community groups, and volunteers. We're also grateful to the L.A. County Department of Public Health's PLACE Program for funding the project in the first place."
Spring Street Green Bike Lane Receive Rose Award from Downtown Breakfast Club

The Spring Street green bike lane and CicLAvia were recognized by the Downtown Breakfast Club with a Rose Award at the annual Roses and Lemons Awards this morning. The Spring Street bike lane, made possible by the work of the Downtown LA Neighborhood Council, LADOT Bike Program, and LACBC, was given the 'Great Idea' Rose Award.

CicLAvia, which will be in action again on Sunday, April 15th, was also given a 'Great Idea' Rose Award and the DBC agreed that these are "good ideas they'd like to see more of." We hope to see more roses awards as we work to create a world-class downtown bike network.
Thanks for Attending the Bici Libre Sunday Funday Ride to the Beach

RR HeaderThanks to all who came out for this past weekend's Sunday Funday Ride. Special thanks to our own Bici Libre Program Coordinator Brenda Yancor for leading the ride, as well as the Bici Libre volunteers for providing ride support on a windy ride to the beach.

You can view a few photo from the ride on the Bici Libre page.

Our next Sunday Funday Ride is a train-themed ride on Sunday, May 6th. We'll have more details in next week's e-newsletter.

Bike Infrastructure & Policy Updates from Around the County

4th Street: It's taken a while, but bicycle signal detection markings have come to 4th Street! Signal loop detectors sense the metal in a car, motorcycle, or bicycle, and cause the traffic signal control box to change the light to green for the waiting traveler. Read more about the bike detectors and how to use them here.

Glendale, Honolulu Road Buffet: Last month, the City Council approved the test-case conversion of Honolulu Avenue from 4 travel lanes to 3 travel lanes to create a "road diet" (or "road buffet" to more accurately describe the scrumptious options if offers to all modes of travel) between Orangedale Avenue and approximately Whiting Woods Road. This road buffet will include bike lanes in each direction. A first community outreach happened this week, and while there was visible support for the project, several community members spoke in opposition to the project. A second community outreach meeting will be held on Thursday, April 26, at 7 PM, and this project needs your support for a safer Honolulu Avenue for all! More info.

RR Header
CicLAvia is coming on Sunday, April 15th, and we know you're all excited for our fourth event that opens up 10 miles of Los Angles streets to people. We're excited too (you can read more about the beginnings of CicLAvia)! We have a few resources up for you to prepare for the big event and will have more in next week's e-newsletter.

Check Your Bike

Before you hop on your bike and head for the CicLAvia route, LACBC recommends you check your bike to make sure it's in good working condition before the big day. With a little more than a week to go, now is the perfect time. Here's a few things you can do. Read about it on the LACBC blog.

Find a Bike

Don't have a bike? Don't fret. You can walk, roller skate, scooter, segway, jump rope, pogo stick, or just dance during CicLAvia. But if you really want a bike, the first 100 people to sign up can rent a bike from Bike Nation USA for free.

Volunteer

Did you know that over 700 volunteers are needed to make each CicLAvia possible? Be one of them as we gear up for the next CicLAvia on April 15, 2012.

LACBC is assisting with the volunteer coordination this time around, and we'd love for you to join us both on the April 15th and for volunteer opporunties beforehand.

Check out the schedule at ciclavia.org/volunteer and email Martin Lopez-Iu at [email protected] to volunteer!

Adopt an Intersection

Looking for a fun new way to volunteer with your friends for CicLAvia 4.15.12? Get a group together and adopt an intersection (like LA Walks is doing)! Dress up, make signs, let people know about your group: the possibilities are endless. This opportunity is great for organizations. Learn more on the CicLAvia website.

If you've been wondering what your favorite bow-tie-wearing scientist of the 90s has been up to, we've found him! Talking about the future of cities, Bill Nye envisions them as being more bike accessible with bike facilities, ample bike parking, showers for riders, and even "cycling tubes" to create a bike network throughout cities. Bill Nye knows what's up.
