Bike Infrastructure & Policy Updates from Around the County

RR Header

Downtown LA: The Spring Street green bike lane is getting its material testing on this weekend! If you access driveways/garages on the west side of Spring along between Aliso and Temple, 5th and 6th, and 6th and 7th, entry and exit will be restricted from 1AM-4PM on Sunday, April 1st. Read more at the DLANC website.

Glendale, Bike Plan: This Tuesday, the Glendale City Council voted to direct staff to continue working on the Glendale Draft Bike Master Plan at a special City Council study session. The draft plan, with few major changes, will now head to the Planning Commission on April 18 with May set as the goal for final adoption. Thanks to all who sent in emails (and made video postcards) in support of the draft plan. It made a difference. Read more at the Glendale News Press.

Glendale, Honolulu Road Buffet: Last month, the City Council approved the test-case conversion of Honolulu Avenue from 4 travel lanes to 3 travel lanes to create a "road diet" (or "road buffet" to more accurately describe the scrumptious options if offers to all modes of travel) between Orangedale Avenue and approximately Whiting Woods Road. This road buffet will include bike lanes in each direction. A first community outreach happened this week, and while there was visible support for the project, several community members spoke in opposition to the project. A second community outreach meeting will be held on Thursday, April 26, at 7 PM, and this project needs your support for a safer Honolulu Avenue for all! More info.

Malibu: Give your input on the Malibu PCH Bike Route Improvement project. The first round of public workshops is on Saturday, March 31st (10 AM - 12 PM) and April 4th (6 PM - 8 PM). More info.

Santa Monica: This past Saturday, with the help of Santa Monica Spoke, cyclists celebrated the unofficial grand opening of Santa Monica's first on-street bike corrals on Main Street. Determined to give this great piece of bike infrastructure its due, Santa Monica Spokers organized a ride and ribbon-cutting ceremony that even Mayor Richard Bloom showed up to. Great job, Santa Monica Spoke! Read more at the Santa Monica Spoke website and check out the photos on the SM Spoke Flickr.

LACBC Returns from Washington DC
RR Header
Our Executive Director Jennifer Klausner, Planning & Policy Director Alexis Lantz, and Program Coordinator Bobby Gadda are now back from the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Summit in Washington DC! Joining 800 advocates from 49 states, these three

As reported last week, KPPC found Jennifer Klausner and her blue hair, while Alexis was spotted riding the DC bikeshare to Capitol Hill on lobby day. Advocating for (or, in most cases, thanking our leaders for already supporting) bike and pedestrian funding in the federal transportation bill, Alexis and Bobby met with several of our representatives from LA County, including staff from Karen Bass, Laura Richardson, Adam Schiff, Linda Sanchez, and Janet Napolitano. Jen met with staff from Congressman Waxman's office and Senator Boxer. Alexis and Bobby also had the joy of meeting Earl Bluemenauer, a bow-tie-wearing representative from Oregon who has championed the bike cause for years.

You can read more about LACBC's excellent DC adventure on the LACBC blog.
Everyone Walks in LA: Los Angeles Walks Advocates for Pedestrian Advocacy
RR Header
Did you know that an active transportation advocacy organization has been fighting for the rights of pedestrian in los angeles for the past 14 years? We are pleased to announce that a new Steering Committee (Alexis Lantz, Alissa Walker, Jessica Meaney, Colleen Corcoran, Michelle Craven, and Anthony Crump) has joined Deborah Murphy, Chair of the city's Pedestrian Advisory Committee, in a new enhanced version of Los Angeles Walks.

Los Angeles Walks is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to promoting walking and pedestrian infrastructure in Los Angeles, educating Angelenos and local policymakers concerning the rights and needs of pedestrians of all abilities, and fostering the development of safe and  vibrant environments for all pedestrians. Los Angeles Walks is now a fiscal recipient of LACBC.

Green T Hosts (it) magazine's "Greening Your City" - Episode One
What's a great way to green your city? Ride your bike! In (it) Magazine's first episode of "Greening Your City," local leaders including LACBC's own executive director Jen Klausner, LA city councilmember Eric Garcetti, and former LA District Attorney Gil Garcetti all talk about the future of bicycling in Los Angeles.

Comparing Los Angeles to Paris, France, a city with bicyclists and bike infrastructure galore, you'll find that these cities have a few more things in common than one might think. With spread-out built environments, Los Angeles can look to Paris as a model of how to incorporate bike facilities in sprawled-out areas.
