Improved County Bike Plan Passes

RR Header
Tuesday morning the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a new Bicycle Master Plan for the unincorporated communities of Los Angeles County with a 4-0 vote! Supervisor Mike Antonovich abstained from the vote. This is the first new bike plan for the unincorporated communities since 1975, and it provides a vision and action plan for the next 20 years.

Thanks to all of you who attended meetings and provided comments on the plan. Because of your efforts, the total mileage of bikeways in the plan increased from the initial 695 proposed miles to 832 miles!

We encourage you to thank your County Supervisor for approving the plan and let them know that you support the projects planned for your area. If you live in County District 5, we encourage you to let Supervisor Mike Antonovich--who is concerned about funding for the bike plan (a third of what was spent on the 405 widening project) and abstained from voting--know how important the bike plan is.

Bike Infrastructure & Policy Updates from Around the County

Beverly Hills:  At next Tuesdays Beverly Hills City Council study session (3/6 at 1:30 pm), policymakers will hear about the proposed Bike Route 'Pilot' program and provide guidance to Transportation on the four already-identified routes. Read the Better Bike Beverly Hills recap hereThe City Council agenda will be released Friday (email notification is available here).

With public outreach & community meetings expected to follow, this is your chance to tell Beverly Hills policymakers what you think of the options before they go to the public.

Then the following Thursday (3/8) the BH Planning Commission will make a site visit to the city's Western Gateway, where an overlay zone is planned. Better Bike has worked to ensure that active transportation is considered when SM Boulevard setbacks are determined, and that the bike lane option is explicitly identified as an objective of the new zone. Read the city staff report here.

Later in March, attend the Planning Commission meeting to learn how the Commissioners will square their current endorsement of very narrow setbacks with the preservation of bike lanes on the corridor. Read the Better Bike letter here.

Westside: The Westside Cities Council of Governments (WSCCOG)  has been working on a WSCCOG regional bicycle safety and awareness plan since last year.  An important element of the plan are recommendations to connect the Westside Cities through implementing bicycle infrastructure projects.  The recommended projects or "gap closures" will create a basic regional bicycle infrastructure network to provide north/south and east/west connections. Individual cities within the WSCCOG will then be encouraged to implement projects these projects and close gaps in their route systems.

The following priority gap closures were presented to the WSCCOG Board on January 19, 2012

  • Santa Monica Blvd./Broadway (from La Brea Blvd. to Ocean Ave.)
  • San Vicente Blvd. (from Sunset Blvd. to La Brea Blvd.)
  • Barrington Ave./McLaughlin Ave./Slauson Ave. (from Sunset Blvd. to the Ballona Creek Bike Path)
  • Beverly Dr./Beverwil Dr./Duquesne Ave./Jefferson Blvd./Overland Ave.(from San Vicente to Westfield/Culver City Transit Center)
  • Expo Light Rail Bike Path/Bikeway (from La Brea Blvd. to the western terminus of Phase 2)

To view a map of the proposed  routes click hereWSCCOG is accepting comments now through March 4, 2012. The results of the comment period will be brought to the Board at its March 15, 2012 meeting in Culver City. Email your comments to the WSCCOG at [email protected].

Making Streets Safer With On-Street Bike Parking
Making Streets Safer With On-Street Bike Parking

The Sunset Triangle in Silver Lake has a bike corral installed, meaning that the City of LA's bike corral total is now up to 2! However, with LADOT's bike corral expansion project taking shape (you can make bike corral requests if you click on the link up above), LA can expect more bike corrals in the future.

Why exactly are bike corrals so great?

This Streetfilm, entitled "Making Streets Safer With On-Street Bike Parking," shows how a bike corral in Brooklyn, New York, has not only provided riders of bikes with more bike parking but also made the street safer by providing motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and other street users with a clearer view at the intersection. Bike corrals are welcoming and safe.
