It's been an interesting year for AMP - somewhat calmer than last year, when there were parties in LA (twice), NYC, Berkeley and Amsterdam - but my day job, teaching Sociology full-time at the university, requires a good bit of attention and energy, and keeping AMP running on my own takes a lot too. That said, the Body of Art exhibit in March (click here to see the art and reception pictures) was an outstanding show, AMP's November Party (click here to see pictures) was a really good time with about 225 guests, our membership is at 3700, and the website is getting about 10,000 hits per day from people in 50-100 countries (depending on the month). Erotic AMP is still in development, as I'm working to make it a first-rate show, in a strong and appropriate gallery, with a schedule of speakers and entertainment for the run of the show. New calls, opportunities, and member art and music are constantly being posted on our website - more about those below.

But now - the end of the year - is a good time to ask for two things: feedback (also known as your 2 cents) and contributions (for example, 5 dollars). Actually, your 5 dollars and 2 cents would be great. AMP costs money to run (we'll talk about energy some other time), and every month, it all comes straight out of my pocket (donations this year have paid for only about 1 1/2 months of webhosting). If you've ever benefited from AMP - if you

  • post your art, poetry, songs on the website
  • found an interesting new contact through AMP
  • stayed on an AMP member's sofa
  • applied to a call posted in AMP and got your work in a show
  • posted your call on the AMP website
  • used the long list of art magazine links on AMP
  • learned about something useful from AMP's World Art Directory or Online Resources
  • got some inspiration from news in a fellow member's blog on AMP
or were helped by AMP in any other way, it would be so very nice if you would contribute some small amount of money. You can use AMP's PayPal link (also on the website) by clicking here or, if you'd rather use the postal service, AMP's address is

AMP: Artists Meeting Place
P.O. Box 292198

If you want to send more than 5 bucks, that's great! But 5 bucks is just fine - and good to hear your 2 cents on more ideas for AMP.

Then read on below for more ways to connect with the art world...

Almost every day, new opportunities are posted on AMP - mainly from stuff that comes into my email inbox, but also from AMPers with ways to help each other. Ned Buskirk regularly posts reminders that he'll help you create - and then host - your own podcast, free!

And if you want to know how to get your very own crisp, clear personal website - your own address, not a group hosting site like MySpace - for a very low price (discounted for AMP members), email me at [email protected]. Below are other opportunities that posted recently on AMP:

AMP is nice as it is, but it would be a lot nicer if more of you would sign on and join in. Post your art in the galleries, your musings and gigs in your blog, your sounds to AMP audio, your calls and opportunities in the Art Classifieds - it all goes straight to the front page (and artists, gallerists, producers, and many more all over the world see it every day).

Email a hello to someone in your postal code.

I'd love to see simultaneous parties in different parts of the world, connected to each other with video feed through laptop computers. AMP's development depends on you joining in. If you'd like to see an AMP party in your part of the world, you should start organizing one! Email me for tips on how to do that.

Write an few paragraphs for AMP's upcoming newsletters about the art scene in your part of the world - or about your life as an artist. Email me for details.

So, your 2 cents. Add 5 dollars if you can. And if you'd feel better about giving if you had something specific to show for it (and who could blame you in this global economy?), buy a month of ad space on AMP. It's cheap ($15 and up). Or buy an AMP t-shirt ($15-20 - look above to see Gil Assayas of missFlag wearing his, or look at AMP party photos to see other members wearing theirs). But really, better than just about anything else is getting involved.

I look forward to hearing from you, and wish you a prosperous 2009.

all the best,
