Chinese Woman by Matthew Freeth
Here's a fascinating worldwide community-art project to answer the simple question "why do you do what you do?" or "why did you do what you did?" by combining an image and text in a creative way.

PEOPLE FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD CAN PARTICIPATE!

CALL FOR ENTRIES - public art exhibition
UCLA LIVE | Freud Playhouse | December 3-7, 2008

Deadline for entries: November 1

Answer "Why do you do what you do?" using text & imagery in a creative way.

UCLA Live is collaborating with artist Tony Deifell to create a major participatory public-art exhibition called, "wdydwyd?" - in front of Freud Playhouse on the UCLA campus.

Since 2004, over 4,000 people have answered, "wdydwyd?" from groups as diverse as Harvard Business School, Echoing Green Foundation, Kellogg Foundation Fellows, and the Burning Man Art Festival, and such notable figures as Steve Case ( founder of AOL) and Gloria Steinem.

Matthew Freeth
Matthew Freeth started off as a cartoonist in 1970's England, greatly influenced by Robert Crumb, Zap Comix, Aubrey Beardsley, and W. Heath Robinson. He gradually put his pen aside to take up collage, which he's been doing ever since. After traveling in Southern Europe, Freeth decided to go to art school in Norwich, Norfolk in the early 1980's, where he came under the spell of Surrealism, amongst other things. This started a continuous process of collecting various materials. He returned to cartooning by way of animation with a job on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?".

Freeth has worked as an illustrator from time to time, along with other animation projects in film, television series and commercials, which brought him to America to work for Dreamworks. He is currently working on a number of projects in Los Angeles, California, and is part of a group show at the Julie Rico Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles' Gallery Row.

His work is featured in this newsletter.

Planet Earth
And...I thought many of you all over the world might be interested in another project I'm working on right now. Several years ago, when I was staying with a Hungarian friend in Amsterdam, she asked me this question: "Don't you think that since the American President has so much influence over the whole world, that everyone ought to have a vote?" This project grew from that (very interesting) conversation.

The official vote is of course still reserved for U.S. Citizens, but now you can "vote" at UniVote. It takes about 1 minute to "register to vote" and, just like with the official vote, it's anonymous. Once you sign in, you can also blog and comment - and there's a huge list of informational resources, including links to international news sources, magazines and commentary, newsblogs, and polls. Have your say at UniVote.

See you in November!

all the best,
