Past life regression or P.L.R. is a process, often conducted under the guidance of a hypnotist, where a person time travels to a previous incarnation.
Some undergo P.L.R. out of sheer curiosity. Did I live before and if so, who was I?
Others believe that events in previous lives are having a negative effect today and need to be resolved. In some cases, it seems people encounter each other in different forms and relations over the ages.
Eastern spiritual traditions such as Hinduism and Buddhism maintain that the spiritual self survives the death of the physical body and is reborn numerous times. The purpose of each incarnation is to move closer towards spiritual perfection and to eventually leave the cycle of death and rebirth altogether.
Much like a school, if a person does not learn a specific lesson within a given lifetime it will be repeated again and again until they do.
The Abrahamic faiths prominent in the western world as rule do not believe in reincarnation. Some even consider it blasphemous.
Those of the skeptical/rationalist point of view tend to find the idea of reincarnation and past life regression patently ridiculous. Often they will point factual inconsistencies in people's accounts of previous incarnations. Also, they usually maintain that there is no evidence that the spiritual self exists in the first place!
While it is a fascinating topic to debate, maybe the important question is not whether P.L.R. is real but rather is it useful in some cases?
Hypnotists have long known that while symbols and metaphors may not be real under "laboratory conditions" they are still potent and powerful subconscious forces in any person's life. If you believe something strongly enough it might as well be true even if it isn't.
So whether a person actually goes back to a previous incarnation during past life regression or is creating an insightful psychodrama related to current dilemma, is probably unimportant. So is past life regression real? If it helps, it is real enough!
