In the previous issue of the Creative Calm newsletter (
archived here) we examined how simply imagining your goals as accomplished without also preparing for the inevitable effort and adversity can actually be counterproductive
Another little known secret of visualization is that it has a stronger effect if you imagine watching yourself from the outside rather than in first person mode. In other words like seeing yourself as if watching a movie or play.
Some current research into the brain suggests that this is so simply because it requires more effort and thus engages more neurons. The more connections between brain cells, the more lasting the imprint.
So as you close your eyes and take a few relaxing breaths run a movie of yourself making that perfect golf swing or firmly saying no to the offer of a cigarette or junk food.
As you experience triumph feel the positive feelings and remember to remember them.
A caveat: not everyone can form crystal clear visual images in their mind's eye and some come to believe they cannot benefit from this type of practice. You get the same benefit from just thinking about what you would see.
Also some of us imagine sounds or feelings more readily and vividly. Ideally all senses are engaged in the production of your mental success movie. See you at the premiere!
