Reporting from Hyannis Port, Mass., and Boston - The motorcade carrying
the body of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy left his Cape Cod home this
afternoon, the first leg of the liberal icon's journey to his final
resting place near his assassinated brothers.
Relatives attended a private Mass at Kennedy's home before the
funeral motorcade left on its more than 60-mile journey from the family
compound to Boston. Mourners gathered in the bright sunshine at both
ends of the route dotted with flags and the occasional sign thanking
Kennedy, who died Tuesday night, for his decades of public service.
Today's ceremonies were a mix of the public and private, reflecting the
life of Kennedy, 77, who became a fierce liberal voice while assuming
the patriarchal duties for the families of his slain brothers.
