Cuba and the New Castro Regime

Half of a century ago, a
young revolutionary by the name of Fidel Castro established himself as the
premier figure in Cuba. He and his guerillas, which included his brother Raul
Castro and iconic revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, successfully overthrew the
American backed Batista regime. Castro's Revolution changed the dynamics of the
Cold War in a profound way. No longer did the United States have an ocean
between its cities and those of their enemies. The United States all of the
sudden had a powder keg less than 100 miles from its shores. Moreover, on
several instances, it looked as if the fuse had been lit and the two nations
would be at war.
It is well known that the two moments with greatest
tension occurred during the Kennedy Administration. First, while President Eisenhower had
previously set the Bay of Pigs fiasco in motion, Kennedy issued the order for
the invasion. Then roughly a year and a half later, the world watched and
waited for thirteen days as the Soviet Union and United States faced off during
the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both of these incidents have left residual effects to
this day.
The Bay of Pigs invasion established what would
eventually become a drawn out rhetorical and ideological battle between the
United States and Cuba. As a result of the failed invasion, Castro became
convinced that the United States would continue to assert what he saw as its
imperialism under the guise of democracy and famed Monroe Doctrine. His fear of
another attempted invasion prompted Cuba's agreement to allow Soviet
inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to be placed on the island.
Perhaps the moment of greatest tension during the
sixty years of the Cold War came as a result of the stand-off over the ICBMs
located in Cuba. While under intense pressure by military advisors to invade
Cuba, President Kennedy decided to take another route. He announced that the
United States would blockade Cuba in order to prevent any further arms from
reaching the island.
Without a doubt, both incidents have led to very
tense forty-five period between these two geographically close nations. Further,
it seemed as long as Fidel remained the leader of Cuba, both he and any
President of the United States would continue its seemingly petulant actions
towards one another. However, on February 19, 2008, Fidel finally stepped down
from power. While some speculation occurred as to who would be selected as the
next leader in nearly fifty years, the realistic choice was Fidel's younger
brother, Raul.
Raul had run Cuba as interim leader for nearly a
year and a half. As a result of health problems, Fidel "temporarily" gave his
brother the reigns of the nation during the summer of 2006. Fidel would never
effectively return as the active ruler of the communist nation. Then after a
year and a half of running the nation, Raul Castro received the role as the new
official leader of Cuba.
A debate certainly has occurred over the years
about what type of leader Raul would be if he would actually become his
brother's successor. The various
speculations have only intensified since 2006, coming to an apex after his
official nomination. Reporters,
columnists, and pundits alike have engaged in this discussion. Would Raul in
fact rule Cuba with the iron fist from the days of his aggressive youth? Or,
would Raul play a more pragmatic and intelligent role for the greater good of
Cuba's future?
In his critically acclaimed book titled After Fidel:
The Inside Story of Castro's Regime and Cuba's Next Leader, Brian Latell
takes a deep analytic approach to answer the questions regarding Raul. Throughout
the book, Latell discusses both possible types of leadership possibilities. He
seems to acquiesce to the notion that Raul will try to be more accommodating to
Cubans both domestically and the disaffected abroad as well as improve its
relations with the United States. Yet, Latell ultimately states that only time
will tell what sort of leadership Raul will choose to lead his nation.
In the end, no person will really be able to
accurately assess which position Raul will take. While no drastic steps have
been taken in either direction during the following days of his recent
succession, only time will tell the direction Raul will choose to take the
island nation.

Robert Kennedy Assassination Updates
|
New evidence suggests second shooter killed RFK
|
03/26/2008 Filed by David Edwards and Nick Juliano (Raw Story)
Forty
years after Democratic rising star Robert F. Kennedy was killed at a
Los Angeles hotel during his presidential run, new evidence suggests
the man serving a life sentence for his murder did not fire the shots
that killed the charismatic senator. MSNBC Video Link
Forensic
scientists met at a conference in Connecticut this week to discuss
their independent findings that cast serious doubt on the Kennedy
assassination. Sirhan Sirhan is serving a life sentence in Kennedy's
death, but the conference presenters argue he could not have fired the
fatal shot that killed Kennedy.
One investigator, Dr. Robert
Joling, has studied the Kennedy assassination for nearly four decades.
He determined the fatal shot came from behind Kennedy, while Sirhan was
four to six feet in front of the senator and never got close enough to
shoot him from behind, an NBC affiliate reports.
Analysis by
another forensics engineer, Philip Van Praag, of a Canadian journalists
tape recording, known as the Pruszynski recording, determined that 13
shots were fired while Kennedy was killed, although Sirhan's gun only
held eight bullets, according to the NBC reporter. This suggests that a
second shooter was involved in the assassination.
Van Praag's
analysis led him to conclude that a second gun that was fired matched a
type owned by one of the security guards in Kennedy's entourage.
"When
that security guard was asked about owning that gun at first he
admitted, 'Yes I owned that kind of gun but I got rid of it two months
before the assassination.'" correspondent Amy Parmenter said on MSNBC
Wednesday. "It turns out upon further investigation, in fact, he did
not get rid of that gun until five months after the shooting. Of
course, you can see where we're going with this. ... That security
guard, was in fact behind Senator Kennedy when the fatal shot was
fired."
------- WORLD PREMIERE: Documentary feature on the RFK assassination "Personal Quests for Truth" From Mark Sobel and William LawThe World Premiere of the new film "Personal Quest" will be at the Sacramento International Film Festival April 5, just 2 months prior to the 40th anniversary, along with an appeal by supporters in Sacramento the day before the screening. This film will hopefully be the catalyst for the kind of press attention needed to have a hope of bringing a renewed effort to come into being. T he feature is the first
in-depth examination of the RFK case and its many historically undocumented
elements, and examines the trial of Sirhan Sirhan, presenting to the
public for the first time the previously sealed tape recordings of the hypnosis
sessions of the accused assassin just before the trial in an effort to un-block
his amnesia. It should be noted that this film represents a "neutral" call-for-action, it is not a conspiracy oriented call --- rather it is a general call for fact-finding to fill in the missing holes that were left unanswered historically by the trial ... including issues such as whom else Sirhan may have been in touch with in the time leading up to the assassination, much more detailed information on Sirhan's own experiments with hypnosis and what role, if any, it might have played in the event, and whether the official investigation fully sought to investigate all possible avenues (given that RFK probably had more political enemies at that time than any other politician in the world). Unlike Lee Harvey Oswald, who is no longer alive to bring clarity, Sirhan Sirhan is still alive and might be a source of information if efforts not followed through with in 1968 and 1969 were to be employed today. With Sirhan's co-operation, we propose tactics such as properly planned and extensive re-hypnosis (over a period of weeks or months) conducted by world-class experts --- in addition to any details of what happened in the pantry that night, but to take him back months before the shooting, and piece together his movements and contacts. Because of the cults of the 70s and 80s, much has been learned about removing mental "blocks" in memory using hypnosis --- techniques not available in the late 1960s. In effect, there is now likely a scientific method of gaining access to previous unreachable information. It is important to remember, the hypnosis done in 1969 before the start of the trial was just a tiny ad-hoc effort to jog Sirhan's memory about the assassination itself, not to answer the far deeper question of "Why." But it will take action by the California Department of Justice and elected officials in order to put such a process in motion. Efforts are being made to arrange for an informal meeting with the California Legislature and Press at the Capital Building on Friday afternoon, April 4, to use the premiere of "Personal Quest" and the upcoming 40th Anniversary to call for a renewed effort to seek answers to the unanswered questions regarding the 1968 RFK assassination. To buy tickets online, go to the Film Festival's web site at www.SacramentoInternationalFilmFestival.com . Click TICKETS/VENUES. Under "24th St Theater" click the grey word "screenings." Scroll down to the title "Personal Quests For Truth" and to the right is a button BUY TIX. And if the screening on April 5 at 2pm is sold out, people should call the Film Festival Director and ask to be put on a waiting list for extra screenings. Indeed, selling out a FEW screenings would be the best PR of all to attract further distribution of the film. After 40 years, THIS is the chance for each individual who is devoted to the memory of Bobby Kennedy and a final 'Personal Quest for Truth' regarding his death to take action before the matter is resigned to pure history. The official website of the film is www.MarkSobel.com.
