    2006 NABNA Training Conference
    NABNA2006

On Behalf of the NABNA National Board, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the Los Angeles NABNA Chapter for successfully hosting the 2006 Training Conference in Pasadena, CA. (July 16 thru July 23, 2006). Their theme "Together We Can Do Great Things; Combining Minds To Adapt and Overcome" was a reminder that we should pursue our goals collectively with a shared vision.

Due to the efforts of the Los Angeles Chapter, national corporate sponsorship opportunities were established with Blue Cross and Blue Shield with possible corporate sponsorship from Geico, Wright and Company, The Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA), and Wright and Company. The Los Angeles Chapter, led by their President Laverne Matthews, worked tirelessly and diligently in preparation for the conference. "They should be commended for a job well done."

Special thanks to the City of Pasadena, Drug Enforcement Administration, Sponsors, and hospitality provided by the NOBLE San Gabriel Valley Chapter during the entire conference.

The National Officers also take this opportunity to thank our members who travelled from afar to attend the conference, as we always appreciate your dedication and support.

2006 Carroll Gibson Scholarship Banquet and Scholarship Recipients
    Sholarship Banquet

On Friday July 21, 2006, the 2006 Carroll R. Gibson Scholarship Recipients were announced during the Scholarship Awards Banquet. During the Banquet the audience was overwhelmed and enlightened by special guest speaker, actor, lecturer, and philanthropist, Wren Brown. For those in attendance, Wren Brown's message was brilliant and probably one of the best speeches received at a NABNA Conference. The following students of Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) were recipients of Carroll R. Gibson Scholarships:

Larosha D. Paul, South Carolina State University ($500)

Myeisha Nelson, Prairie View A&M University ($1000)

Marika Dawkins, Prairie View A&M University ($1000)

Pia Scott, South Carolina State University ($1000)

Lakeita Pendergrast, St. Augustine’s College ($1000)

In Addition, NABNA Vice President James H. Williams presented a 3,000.00 donation to the Carroll R. Gibson Scholarship Fund on behalf of Founder and Retired DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Gerald Chapman. Although Founder Chapman was not present, his donation was made on behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and issued a challenge for other fraternities and sororities to contribute to the scholarship fund. Due to prior commitment Founder Chapman was unable to attend. NABNA President Karl Colder thanked Founder Chapman for his donation and encouraged every member to contribute to the scholarship fund.

A message from the National Vice President
    Marilyn Johns

During the 2006 Annual Training Conference, The Los Angeles Chapter recognized retired Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Marilyn J. Johns for her dedicated services to DEA from 1972 to 1989. Ms. Johns was the first African American female Special Agent of the DEA. As the first African American DEA Special Agent, she experienced many obstacles in her path, but through it all she persevered. During her acceptance, she continuously thanked and acknowledged other African American females who entered on duty with DEA after her for their support.

Also present during the conference were DEA Supervisory Special Agents Wilfred Garrett (Fort Lauderdale, FL), Eddie B. Hill (San Francisco, CA), William Johnson (Columbus, OH), James H. Williams (Miami, FL), and Special Agent Brenda Lamont (Los Angeles, CA).

Plans are in the making for our 30th Anniversary Annual Training Conference which will be held in Philadelphia, PA July 8th through July 14th, 2007. As part of the 30th Anniversary Training Conference we will recognize all retirees with a reception on the evening of Wednesday July 11th and panel discussions on Thursday July 12th. This will be an excellent opportunity for new and young Special Agents, Diversion Investigators, Intelligence Research Analysts, Administrative Support Personnel, et al to mingle and to share the experiences of our retirees throughout their careers. Please make plans to attend and be a part of History.
