NewsletterJanuary 2011

Greetings!

Our students just completed mid-year exam week at Cristo Rey Boston High School.  Our library, which opens at 6:30 a.m. each day, was more packed than usual, and most students looked serious and focused.  On several afternoons over the past two weeks - around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. - I saw groups of students sitting in classrooms receiving extra academic help from our teachers. This past Friday, when almost every school in the city was closed for snow, Cristo Rey Boston had a 95% attendance rate.

People who visit our school often remark how hard the faculty, staff, and students work.  Our students generally come to us a year or more below grade level, so we have no choice but to give this work our all.  The results are impressive - year after year nearly all of our graduates go to college, and the data is showing that they are remaining in and graduating from college at higher rates than their peers.

And as we capped off the first half of our inaugural year in Dorchester, equally hard-working students are receiving their acceptance letters to join us in the fall. Our faculty and staff cannot wait to meet another set of students ready to push themselves toward a brighter future.

Thank you for continued support of our young people.

Sincerely,
Jeff Thielman Signature

The day after Thanksgiving, the Cristo Rey Boston High School boys basketball team were hard at work, preparing for a fresh season with brand new coach Jim Ebersole. Training alongside some members of the Marr Boys & Girls Club in Dorchester, the Knights stretched, ran drills and scrimmaged on another court that, unfortunately, is not their own.
