Greetings!
Last week I had a conversation with a student living with her grandparents and another who lives with her Great-Grandmother. It turns out that 10% of our students live with grandparents, and 54% of our students are from single-parent families that are helped in one way or another by a grandparent. Only 36% of our students live in families with a mother and father in the house. "My Nana is everything to me," one girl told me. "She's been there for me my whole life. My Mom couldn't take care of me, and my Dad has another family." "My grandparents scrape up whatever they can so I can come to this school," another student told me. "They want me to succeed here." Poverty and the typical challenges of teenage life put unusual pressure on our students. Counselors report that our students are expected to secure a good job upon graduation and somehow lift their entire family to a new economic level. Amidst the pressure of teenage life, grandparents play an enormously important role in the lives of our students. They are part of most families, have the ability and perspective to listen to our students' struggles, and often give our kids the support they need to succeed. As we celebrate this month of Thanksgiving, we salute our grandparents, and we thank every benefactor and corporate sponsor who makes a Catholic, college preparatory education possible for their grandsons and granddaughters. Sincerely,
Jeff Thielman President

AP U.S. Government Visits the JFK Library
On Friday, October 15, thirteen seniors in Mrs. Wagner's AP U.S. Government class went to the JFK Library and Museum to participate in a Gubernatorial Debate. After a delicious fall breakfast of cider and donuts, students went to their assigned small groups to begin the debate. Students from seven schools, including Codman Academy Charter School, Abington High School, and four others, sat together in groups of 12-15 to discuss the issues of this year's governor's race. Students expressed their views and listened to others on the state budget, education reform, casinos, gun control, the Cape Wind project, and capital punishment. Mrs. Wagner's students loved hearing the views of students from other schools. Mauricio Acosta, '11, said, "I really enjoyed debating with students from different backgrounds and schools. They brought new and interesting ideas to the table. I felt that while I was at the JFK Library, I was actually educating myself so I can make better decisions." Students appreciated the diversity of viewpoints as well. Yara Goncalves, '11, said, "Some kids that were there had the same views as I have, but the ones who didn't made good points about why they didn't." Nina Tisch, who coordinated the whole program, said several small group leaders commented on how impressive the Cristo Rey Boston students were. They were engaged and well-informed and contributed valuably to their groups. Read more on what Cristo Rey students said about the event! |
