This morning at 7:30 a.m. 98 9th graders and 6 transfer students walked into our new campus at 100 Savin Hill Avenue to begin orientation. Over the next month, they'll learn the soft and hard skills that are critical to their success at school and at their corporate placements.
The theme this morning was "New Beginnings" - for our school and the freshmen and transfer students. When we gathered the students in our newly refurbished auditorium/library space, we pointed out that they will be the first class to spend four years studying in our new building in Dorchester. We went through an exercise designed to get the students to think about the opportunity they have to build new relationships, develop skills, and prepare for an exciting future.
The students were carefully selected based on their potential to work hard academically and to perform well at their work study assignments. Most will start high school behind a grade or more academically, but with the help of tutors and our intense remediation program, they will reach grade level by the spring. We explained to our students that our mission is to form them to be young men and women of faith, purpose and service.
After an exercise to get them to think about their new lives as students of Cristo Rey Boston, opening remarks by members of the school staff, comments from an upperclassmen, and a review of the rules by our Dean of Students, Christine Guy, our new students walked to the campus of Boston College High School, where they will continue work-study training for the remainder of the week. Because our building is still undergoing minor upgrades, we reached out to Bill Kemeza, the President of BC High, who generously offered space for the first week of training. We're grateful to Bill and his team for their help.
We hope you enjoy some of the pictures from this morning's opening gathering, and we thank you for supporting Cristo Rey Boston High School. |
