Newsletter May 2010
Greetings!

There is no better evidence of the success of our school than the list of places where our students are going to college in the fall.  The Class of 2010 is headed to Georgetown University, Fairfield, Holy Cross, Emmanuel, Suffolk, Regis, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the University of Massachusetts and many other outstanding institutions.

Just about every senior will be the first in their family to go to college.  Their accomplishments are extraordinary, especially since most of these young people entered our school four years ago with literacy and math skills well below grade level.  The feedback we receive from our graduates is that the combination of work and study gives them an advantage over many of their peers.

It has been fun in recent weeks to talk to our seniors.  When they speak about their future, they are openly and genuinely grateful for the help of many people - parents, teachers, the college counseling staff, corporate sponsors, job site supervisors, and benefactors.  The students are mindful that many people have contributed to their success.

We hope you know how powerful your contribution is to the mission of Cristo Rey Boston.  By providing our students with a job or by making a donation, you make a concrete and tangible difference in the lives of some of the neediest and most amazing young people in Greater Boston.  Thank you for believing in our students, for being a critical part of their extraordinary success, and for helping to make our community a better place.

Sincerely,
Jeff Thielman Signature

Students take historic trip to our Nation's Capital!
Students from DC trip
16 seniors and three chaperones, Fr. Jose Medina, Jenny Castro, and Carrie Gilmore, packed into a van and left early on a Wednesday morning in search of learning all they could about our Nation's Capital, Washington D.C.

[As told by Carrie Gilmore, Head of Humanities]
We got into DC at about 7pm.  After dinner, we drove into the city to take a nighttime tour of the mall.  For most students, it was their first time to DC and their first time seeing the Lincoln Memorial. To experience it all at night is truly breathtaking.
On Thursday, we had breakfast at a French cafe, and then students had several hours to explore museums including the American History...

A big THANK YOU to everyone who generously supported the annual Tip O'Neill Legacy Celebration Celebrating Cristo Rey Boston held at the Boston College Club on Thursday, May 6th. Special thanks to our Event sponsors, corporate sponsors, board members, committee members, alumni and event attendees who contributed to the success of the evening by supporting our students. Interested in giving a year of service?

Next year we will have a community of Cristo Rey Boston volunteers living in a former rectory in Dorchester. Think of this program as Tomas times three! The volunteers will complement the Jesuit Volunteer assigned to the Corporate Work Study Office, the UCTC volunteer, and Graduate School of Social Work interns who will assist in various aspects of school life. We are now accepting applications for the Cristo Rey Boston Volunteer Program. If you or someone you know is interested in living in community and serving our school, they can email Annemarie Grimaldi at agrimaldi@myncchs.org.
