The Board of Directors has voted to recall the recent ballot to allow for zipper or head foil for the jib luff attachment to the forestay. After considerable discussion and contemplation, it was decided that an approval vote was premature without the usual experimentation process. This conclusion was reached based on the following.
1. Although the Melges 24 class has used the zippered luff successfully for the past few years, the 24 executes most of the gybes with the jib furled, so an accurate comparison could not be inferred.
2. Although there has been a previous experiment with the head foil, and many members have had experience with the head foil in the A Scow, most members haven't had the opportunity to use or observe its use over an extended period of time.
It is assumed that most members will want to make a choice between a zipper and head foil system based on observing a direct comparison between both. Therefore there is value in having both systems tested in each region, where most members can see both in use throughout the course of the season. The exact details of the experiment have not been established, but when they are the membership will be notified and given the opportunity to participate if desired. |
