Scantling Ballot Result
All four proposed scantling changes passed by very wide margins, 89% - 99%.
Two big differences for this year are:
1. The bowsprit usage has been clearly defined and must be uniformly adhered to for all E-scow racing. Before the vote approval, the bowsprit usage was in the sailing instructions but not all events included a bowsprit usage
statement in their SIs. The wording is now in the scantlings and applies to all E-scows wherever they are racing. It reads:
"The bowsprit may be extended on any leg of the course where the asymmetrical spinnaker can be carried solely for that purpose. When rounding the weather mark with the spinnaker not deployed, the bowsprit may not be extended until after the bow of the yacht is abreast of the mark on the rounding tack. The bowsprit must be retracted as part of a continuous process of retrieving the spinnaker. The bowsprit may be extended momentarily, when well clear of other yachts, to assist in clearing a fouled tack line."
2. Two asymmetrical spinnakers can be registered and used for an event. Prior to the vote, only one asymmetrical spinnaker could be used but a back up spinnaker could be carried on the boat if the primary spinnaker was destroyed beyond use.
The other two ballot items narrowed down the legal measurements and created a midgirth measurement for the asymmetrical spinnakers.
