Greetings!

The membership renewals have been coming in at a steady pace but we need more of your help. Please don't wait until summer starts or that first regatta - this is something to get out of the way now. It is such a big help to us, and everyone that is holding a regatta sure appreciates not having to do this onsite. Besides, we need your latest addresses, both mail and email, to keep in touch and the REPORTER will be coming soon.

I encourage you to click on the link to the left to renew your membership. Also, let me remind you I sent you a letter with membership information that will make the process go smoother.

In the last Digital Reaches I was a little quick to say you can store your boat at the Carolina Yacht Club before the Charleston Easter regatta. You still can but see the correction article below.

Tomorrow they are forecasting a winter storm watch for the area - its a good thing sailors like the winter outdoors as well. If there is snow we ski and if not, there is always an iceboat ride.

Correction

I (Lon) was a little quick to say you can store your boat at the Carolina Yacht Club before the Charleston Easter regatta. Ed Durand emailed me with the following information to correct any misunderstanding.

It is still possible to store your boat between events, but the location is different. The Carolina Yacht Club has too many events around that time of year and their parking space is at a premium.

However, if your boat needs storage in Charleston after Mid-Winters and/or Sarasota regattas, Ed Durand suggested this option.

Ed said, "As I mentioned, my daughter and son-in-law, Katy & Dan Perrin have space at their business." They can be reached at Katie and Dan phone #'s:
843.270.0771 - Dan
442.8715 - Katy

If folks want to be at the Carolina Yacht Club they would need prior approval and their space is very limited. I've copied Tommy Harken (843.830.4483) on this for any Carolina Yacht club storage requests.
Thanks,
            Ed Durand

Scantling Ballot Result

All four proposed scantling changes passed by very wide margins, 89% - 99%.

Two big differences for this year are:
1. The bowsprit usage has been clearly defined and must be uniformly adhered to for all E-scow racing. Before the vote approval, the bowsprit usage was in the sailing instructions but not all events included a bowsprit usage
statement in their SIs. The wording is now in the scantlings and applies to all E-scows wherever they are racing. It reads:
"The bowsprit may be extended on any leg of the course where the asymmetrical spinnaker can be carried solely for that purpose. When rounding the weather mark with the spinnaker not deployed, the bowsprit may not be extended until after the bow of the yacht is abreast of the mark on the rounding tack. The bowsprit must be retracted as part of a continuous process of retrieving the spinnaker. The bowsprit may be extended momentarily, when well clear of other yachts, to assist in clearing a fouled tack line."

2. Two asymmetrical spinnakers can be registered and used for an event. Prior to the vote, only one asymmetrical spinnaker could be used but a back up spinnaker could be carried on the boat if the primary spinnaker was destroyed beyond use.

The other two ballot items narrowed down the legal measurements and created a midgirth measurement for the asymmetrical spinnakers.

REPORTER Magazine Change
At the Board of Directors meeting in November, it was decided that the cost of the REPORTER had to be considerably reduced. Over the past years the expense has steadily increased until the REPORTER was by far and away the largest expenditure. The Associate membership fee wasn't paying for the REPORTER they received. It became out of line with other important expenses and something needed to be done.

The REPORTER you receive in the mail this year will be delivered by mail on a CD. You won't miss it - it will be in a slim jewel case in an envelop with clear identification that it is the REPORTER for 2010. It will be easy to view, since it will be set up to auto play when it is inserted into a player. Also, members can print the REPORTER from the CD and continue to have a copy for their collection.

The Board of Directors are aware that this is a big change and that some people will be disappointed. This decision was not taken lightly and the Board hopes that members understand the need for the change.

The REPORTER will be available to view on the NCESA website. This year we plan to put all past REPORTERS on the website as well. We will start with the ones we have and then put out a request to members to provide us with some missing copies that we can convert for viewing on the web.
Dick Casper
Hall of Fame

Long time NCESA member  Dick Casper of Pine was awarded entry into the Bilge Puller Hall of Fame. Casper is well-known for his E scow prowess but recently is known as the originator of the Hall of Fame which now features members.

The Bilge Pullers is an organization that was formed in 1935. The purpose of the Bilge Pullers is to promote better fellowship between members of various clubs who are members of the ILYA.
