Day 2 of the ILYA Championships had more wind, 10-18 mph, and the direction moved to the right from the day before to about about 160 degrees. The first course of the day was a W2 (about 55 minutes long), and second race was a 2 1/2. We had a lunch break at the club for a couple of hours and the third race was a 3 1/2.
Burdick & team lead the first race of the day all the way. Hard luck went to Peter Mass (X-20) who tipped right near the finish line - too bad he couldn't have drifted across it.
In the second race of the day Kevin Jewett got off to a fast start and had a good lead at the first mark. Brian Porter was 11th at the first mark but slowly reeled Kevin in and nipped him at the finish of the W 2 1/2 course. Louis Hill (W-47) had a great race compared to the day before, rounding the first mark in second and managed a 9th at the finish. Pat Heany (H-13) was third at the first mark - considerably better than the day before - and Pat finished third, but not before dropping a position behind Evans (M-1) and V Porter (I-49) at the second upwind mark. Vincent Porter was fourth at the first mark, third at the next up wind mark and second at the finish. Evans was fifth at the first upwind mark, moved into second and the next upwind, but slipped to 6th at the finish. And what about Burdick you ask - he showed a steady climb at the weather marks from 12th to 5th to 2nd and 2nd at the finish.
Eric Good (V-15), a new young skipper to the E-Fleet, had his moment when he hit the line fast at the pin end and held a long starboard to nearly the port lay line - going fast, he rounded the first mark of the third race of the day in 1st place. He was hanging on but had a slow decline on the 3 1/2 course, to finish 9th. Pat Heany (H-13) must have had his confidence level boosted in the previous two races of the day with a 6 and 5 finishes, because he was second around in the third race. He is another young skipper showing some staying power against some strong competition with very familiar names. Rob Evans had his best race, leading at the rest of the marks and the finish, after his third place rounding of the first mark. Burdick was in the mix from the start moving from 4th to 2nd and giving Evans plenty to worry about right to the finish. It took Brian Porter (I-0) a lap and a half to move from 10th to 3rd where he stayed for the finish. Jewett made steady progress up the ladder going from 7th to 5th to 4th, but slipped a rung to finish 5th.
Vincent Porter (I-49) had to work a lot harder for his 6th place finish going from 17th at the first mark to 10th at the next upwind to 6th at the next upwind, but those in front weren't going to give up any more than a 6th place finish to Vincent. It has to be noted that Chad Olness went from 26th at the first mark to 10th at the finish - that's a good come back.
