The Holy Scriptures

This lesson deals with the authority and role of the Holy Bible in the faith and life of a Christian.  Before you begin this lesson, watch the video:  Is the Bible True?  Some of the people who were interviewed questioned the following statements:

  • The Bible is reliable and historically accurate
  • The Bible was inspired by God
  • The Bible contains everything necessary for salvation
  • The Bible is a guide to help us know how to live as Christians

Now watch The Bible Can Be Trusted. How does Lee Strobel answer some of these doubts?

What we believe about the Bible will determine how we live.  If it is just a book that has some good advice, we may only give it a casual glance from time to time.  But, if we are convinced that it is divinely inspired and contains all we need for salvation, we will be inclined to give it preeminence in our lives.

Article IV

The Holy Bible

We believe in the plenary inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, by which we understand the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, given by divine inspiration, inerrantly revealing the will of God concerning us in all things necessary to our salvation, so that whatever is not contained therein is not to be enjoined as an article of faith.

What does the Bible Say?

Further Explanation

Plenary: The word plenary means "full".  Nazarenes affirm that all 66 books of the Old and New Testament are completely inspired by God.  We do not believe God dictated every word.  Nor do we believe the Bible is simply a compilation of great writings by very wise people.  God used ordinary men to convey His extraordinary message.

Inspiration: 2 Timothy 3:16 says "All Scripture is God-breathed."  "We affirm that God brings life, energy, renewal, and transformation through the Scriptures." (Roger Hahn) This makes the Bible more than a great literary work.  It is life-changing.

"...inerrantly reveals the will God concerning us in all things necessary to our salvation": Nazarenes do not claim that the Bible contains no errors of any kind. The Bible's purpose is simply to bring us into a right relationship with God and each other.
