Article IV
The Holy Bible
We believe in the plenary inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, by which we understand the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, given by divine inspiration, inerrantly revealing the will of God concerning us in all things necessary to our salvation, so that whatever is not contained therein is not to be enjoined as an article of faith. |
Further Explanation
Plenary: The word plenary means "full". Nazarenes affirm that all 66 books of the Old and New Testament are completely inspired by God. We do not believe God dictated every word. Nor do we believe the Bible is simply a compilation of great writings by very wise people. God used ordinary men to convey His extraordinary message.
Inspiration: 2 Timothy 3:16 says "All Scripture is God-breathed." "We affirm that God brings life, energy, renewal, and transformation through the Scriptures." (Roger Hahn) This makes the Bible more than a great literary work. It is life-changing.
"...inerrantly reveals the will God concerning us in all things necessary to our salvation": Nazarenes do not claim that the Bible contains no errors of any kind. The Bible's purpose is simply to bring us into a right relationship with God and each other.
