Before you begin this lesson watch the following video: Temptation
- Talk about embarrassing moments! What would you have done if you had been in Paul Blart's situation?
- What do you think it was like to be caught in such an embarrassing situation?
- Was Paul Blart's behavior sinful, or was he simply being tempted?
No matter how devoted or determined you may be, you will face temptation. The Bible tells us that even Jesus was tempted. (Luke 4:1-2, Hebrews 4:15-16) Temptation is the desire to fulfill a legitimate need in an illegitimate way. It is a trap from the enemy to make us give in to our weaknesses. Weaknesses and temptations go hand in hand. Our weaknesses allow temptations to affect us. Likewise, as we give in to our temptations, our weaknesses become more profound.
Famous comedian, Flip Wilson, used to say, "The Devil made me do it." As Christians, we understand that the Devil cannot make us do anything. (1 Corinthians 10:13; Romans 8:31; 8:37) God has given us all a choice. We can also rely on the Holy Spirit to help us in times of temptation. (Hebrews 2:18; 4:15) In this lesson we will consider many ways you overcome temptation. |
What are the sources of temptation?
- In Matthew 4:3 we learn that there is a tempter who is intent on causing us to fall.
- We live in a world that is filled with evil and negative influences. (Ephesians 2:1-2)
- We are often tempted by our own desires. (James 1:13-14)
