Before you begin this lesson watch the following video: Temptation

  • Talk about embarrassing moments! What would you have done if you had been in Paul Blart's situation?
  • What do you think it was like to be caught in such an embarrassing situation?
  • Was Paul Blart's behavior sinful, or was he simply being tempted?

No matter how devoted or determined you may be, you will face temptation.  The Bible tells us that even Jesus was tempted. (Luke 4:1-2, Hebrews 4:15-16) Temptation is the desire to fulfill a legitimate need in an illegitimate way. It is a trap from the enemy to make us give in to our weaknesses.  Weaknesses and temptations go hand in hand.  Our weaknesses allow temptations to affect us.  Likewise, as we give in to our temptations, our weaknesses become more profound.

Famous comedian, Flip Wilson, used to say, "The Devil made me do it."  As Christians, we understand that the Devil cannot make us do anything.  (1 Corinthians 10:13Romans 8:31; 8:37) God has given us all a choice.  We can also rely on the Holy Spirit to help us in times of temptation.  (Hebrews 2:18; 4:15) In this lesson we will consider many ways you overcome temptation.

What are the sources of temptation?

  • In Matthew 4:3 we learn that there is a tempter who is intent on causing us to fall.
  • We live in a world that is filled with evil and negative influences. (Ephesians 2:1-2)
  • We are often tempted by our own desires. (James 1:13-14)

Understand your own areas of weakness.

The most obvious way to overcome temptation is to know your own areas of weakness. Read and respond to the following Bible verses:

  • Ephesians 5:10-11
  • Psalm 139:23-24
  • Job 31:1
  •

As you identify areas of vulnerability in your life, it is important to take steps to avoid future temptation.

    • Stay far away from tempting circumstances. Watch this video: Marshmallow Temptation
      • What were the different reactions of the kids?
      • Which child would you say is most like you?
      • Did you notice the child who ate the marshmallow then immediately tried to hide the evidence?  Is this a common response?
      • If you were in this situation what would you try in order to resist?
    • Make a plan of escape. Then act quickly and decisively. Just as Job made "a covenant with his eyes," we too must have a plan of action that will help us to avoid temptation.
    • Find a close and trusted friend who will listen without judging and then hold you accountable and support you in prayer.

The best defense against temptation is a disciplined life.

    • Why do you think Paul Blart colapsed at the end?
    • What could Paul have done to be more prepared for the obticle course?
    • Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

This movie clip is a great example of how our spiritual "endurance" is directly linked to our spiritual exercise or discipline. We have talked about these disciplines throughout this series.  But let us take a moment to review:

    1. Meet regularly with a mentor.
    2. Join a small group or MOSAIC group where you can find support from fellow believers.
    3. Pray regularly.
    4. Read, study and memorize Scripture daily.
    5. Become part of a church community where you can learn and grow with other Christians.
    6. Worship regularly.
    What happens when I fail?

One person said, "Failure is just a rehersal for success." Failure does not need to lead to defeat. Often the Temptor will try to persuade us otherwise--convincing us that our failure doesn't matter, or that there is no use to keep trying. His hope is that you will give in, give up, and return to your old lifestyle.

God knows that even the most sincere and devoted Christians may one day disobey Him.    Fortunately God gives us hope. While it is possible for us to live without sin, He has made provision for us when we fail. (1 John 2:1-6)  Here are a few things you can do to recover from failure.

    • Be quick to confess.  The moment you become aware of your failure take it directly to God in prayer. (2 Corinthians 7:10-11)
    • Accept God's forgiveness. It is not God's desire to punish you. He doesn't want you to fail.  He wants you to succeed.  (Romans 8:38-39)
    • Ask the important question--What just happened here?  How did I find myself in this situation?  What can I do to avoid this in the future? (Hebrews 12:1)
    • Seek the advice and council of a strong and trusted Christian. Look to other Christians for support and prayer.
    • Move on... (Isaiah 43:18-19
