Communion

Communion is a very significant part of the Christian life. Each time we receive Communion we have an opportunity to evaluate ourselves, reflect on God's grace and celebrate our new life in Christ. As you work through this lesson with the person you are mentoring, share what receiving communion has done to increase your faith.

Evangelical Christians do not believe that the act of receiving the Eucharist actually cleanses us from sin. We do not believe that, once the elements are blessed, they become the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ nor when you eat the bread and drink the wine you are literally drinking His blood and body. This understanding has profound implications.

Holy Communion is a type of reenactment or commemoration of Christ's death on the cross. While the Eucharist presents an opportunity for us to receive God's grace, the act itself does not save us. If the person you are mentoring comes from a more liturgical background, he/she may need some clarification on this issue.
