It has been reported that the average person who has a bad experience at restaurant will tell at least eight people. It is much the same when we have a good experience.  We are compelled to tell others about our experiences. How many of us--when we see a great sports game on television or watch a great movie--make it a point to tell our friends and family?

Most likely, those who are close to you have been noticing a few changes--attitudes, lifestyle, conversation, and choices. They may be a little curious about what's going on. Wouldn't it be a great idea to share your new found faith with those you love and care about?

The purpose of this lesson is to help you understand the importance of sharing your faith with others and make it as easy and natural as sharing about a new restaurant, a great football game, or your latest vacation.

Jesus prepared His first disciples to share with others.

  • When Jesus first called His disciples he told them that He would make them "fishers of men".   (Matthew 4:19
  • Later we see that He was moved with compassion for people. He asked his disciples to pray for more people who would help spread the good news. (Matthew 9:35)
  • He gave His disciples a "crash course" on how to evangelize, (Matthew 10) then He sent them out to share the Gospel.
  • It was during this time of instruction that Jesus made the declaration, "Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven." (Matthew 10:32-33)
  • After Jesus rose from the dead He told the people to go and make disciples. (Matthew 28:19)
  • Before He returned to heaven, Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power to become His witnesses. (Acts 1:8-9)

Overcome Fear

  • What is the biggest reason people don't share their faith?
  • Have you ever felt like some of the people in the interview?
  • How can you overcome your fear?

Fear is a very powerful force.  Even when we have good news, fear will sometimes keep us from sharing it with others.

  • What if I am rejected and lose all my friends?
  • I don't know what to say.
  • What if I make a mistake?
  • What if I do more damage than good?
  • What if they don't understand Christianity the way I do?

We fiind the phrase "fear not" over 100 times in the Bible.  2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that we can overcome our fears. The first disciples were filled with great fear.  When Christ died on the cross they all scattered and hid in fear.  But something happened on the day of Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit took away their fear and replaced it with boldness. (Acts 2 God can do the same for you.  Pray that God will fill you with His Spirit and give you the courage you need.

Look For Opportunities

It is important to look for opportunities to share your faith.  Here are a few ways that will help.

  • Wake each morning and ask God to lead you to people who are ready to listen.
  • Make a list of the ten people you would like to see come to Christ.  Pray daily for these people. Do something to reach out to them--write a note or email.  Help them with a need.  Have coffee or lunch with them.
  • Plan to tell your story.  Write it out and practice it if necessary.
  • Memorize Scripture.  When you memorize Scripture, it seems to naturally come up in conversation.
  • Be a good listener.  Sometimes people are looking for Christ.  They drop hints to us, but we are not listening well.
  • Be a good example. (Matthew 5:15-16
  • Keep it simple.  Watch this video from Lesson One:

Keep it Simple

    • What did the tutor say to Abshim?
    • How long was it before he eventually became a Christian?
    • What was it that eventually caused Abshim to become a Christian?
Know what to say

It is important that we have a plan and are prepared.  We should know what to say if someone should become interested in hearing more about Christianity. (2 Timothy 4:2)

  • Be ready to tell how you became a follower of Christ.  How did it happen?  What difference has it made?
  • Be prepared to share the simple plan of salvation. Memorize these basic steps along with the Scriptures.
    • Recognize that God loves you and has a plan for your life. His love includes you. (John 3:16)
    •  Admit that you have sinned.  Recognize that we have all sinned and that sin separates you from God. (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)
    • Recognize that Jesus Christ died and rose again for our sins. Romans 5:8
    • In order to be saved you must repent and ask God for forgiveness.  (Proverbs 28:13 1 John 1:9
    • God invites you to trust Him and receive Him as your Savior. (Revelation 3:20)
