Homelessness In America
Homelessness In America

It's all about others

Throughout this series we have been discovering ways to lay a strong foundation that will help us to prevail as followers of Christ. Practicing a lifestyle of generosity is another important factor in our spiritual development. Take a moment and watch the following video:

 Homeless Man Gives Back.

  • Has anyone ever asked you for money?  How did you respond?
  • Which of the following statements reflect the most common attitude towards the poor?
    • If they weren't so lazy, they wouldn't be in this perdicament?
    • If I give this person money, he will probably spend it on drugs or alchohol.
    • Our governement system is broken, and that's why we have so many poor people.
    • I would like to do something to help.

In the movie "Emperor's New Groove" the main character makes the statement, "It's all about me!"  For Christians it is quite the opposite.  In the community of faith it is all about others.  Compassion, service and generosity should be a priority in the life of all Christians.

What did Jesus say about giving and serving?

Here are a few Scripture verses that will help you understand God's perspective on giving and serving.

  • Luke 4:16-21--What did Jesus say His own ministry on earth was all about?
  • Matthew 6:1-2--What did Jesus say about prideful giving?
  • Matthew 25:31-41--When we give to and serve others, who are we really serving?
  • Luke 21:1-4--What is Jesus' opinion of those who give everything they have?

Jesus set the example of serving others?

He is the kind of person who would serve the coffee at a high powered executive meeting--even though He isthe C.E.O. of the company.  He is the one who would seek out the disenfranchized in order to offer help and words of encouragement. He would stop an important meeting in order to tend to a sick person who was in need.  Who is he?  His name is Jesus.

Jesus often made others feel uncomfortable with his acts of kindness.  Read the following passage: John 13:4-16

  • What did Jesus do that made his disciples feel so uncomfortable?
  • Why do you think Jesus washed the disciples' feet?
  • What did Jesus say when he was finished?
  • Considering Jesus' example and his command, what obligation do we have as His followers?

More about serving others...

The first followers practiced generosity.

The first Christians made it a habit to give generously.  Read the following passages.  Why do you think these people were motivated to give?  What was the result of their generosity?

What do we mean by giving tithes and offerings?

T I T H E

One tenth (10%) of everything God gives us, belongs to Him. It is called tithe. (Leviticus 27:30)

The Bible first mentioned tithe in Genisis 14:20. Abraham learned this principle from his close relationship with God.(James 2:23) He taught this principle to future generations long before God revealed it in his written law. Because of these teachings, Abraham's grandson, Jacob, promised to give a tithe of everything he got from his work or business. (Genesis 28:22) As a result, they were the richest men of the entire region

Just as Abraham gave his tie to Melchizedek, God's high priest, believers of the new covenant should also give their tithes to Jesus Christ, their high priest the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:9, 10; 7:1-22) God later introduces this commandment in the law and his people practice it knowing that it holds the secret to their prosperity, protection and blessing. When God's people disobeyed this law, God told them that they had stolen from him and would be cursed. (Malachi 3:8-9) On the other hand, the only passage where God authorizes us to test him is in (Malachi 3:10). With this, he demonstrates his interest in blessing us abundantly and defending our resources from the devil. (Malachi 3:11; John 10:10)

In the New Testament, Jesus reinforces the importance of tithing and living a holy life that is pleasing to God. (Matthew 23:23). A good steward also knows that God should be first in his life and in his finances. A committed believer types to the church where he receives his nourishment and spiritual supervision.

Offerings show the commitment of the good steward because it is exceeds the minimum requirement of tithe. Offerings are not alms or money that we have left over. (Mark 12:41-44) They are expressions of the thankful heart and devotion to God. 1 (Chronicles 29:13-14; Psalm 96:8) They are seeds in the fertile fields of the work of God. (1 Corinthians 9:5-13) When they are sewn generously they reproduce the wealth that God has promised us. The Macedonians are an excellent example of the type of offering the God expects.(2 Corinthians 9:1-9)
