Jeffrey M. Smith, author of Seeds of Deception and founder of the Institute of Responsible Technology, has been leading the charge to encourage a consumer tipping point and put an end to GMO technology. The premise is simple. Food manufacturers resp ond to consumer demands and farmers respond to food manufacturers. So, if consumers demand non GMO- food then there is no financial incentive for GMO seed.
Many of us wonder as both practitioners and consumers that if this occurs, what happens with the seeds and resulting plants that are already loose in nature. While we wait for the research to give us the answer, here is some positive information we can focus on.
- New corn hybrids (ready for planting in 2012) exist with a trait that allows the plant to block pollen from neighbouring genetically modified corn
- Super weeds resistant to Monsanto's Roundup Ready herbicide have been found in millions of hectares of farmer's fields who have been growing crops with Roundup Ready seed
- According to the EPA Monsanto Bt corn-genetically engineered to kill insects-is losing its effectiveness against rootworms in four states
On the consumer front:
- Non-GMO labeling, according to Nielsen's ratings, is up by 67% in 2009 with a sales growth of $60.2 million in that sector and over 6000 companies in North America have opted for Non-GMO labels to indicate their commitment to making products free of GMO's
- Last year 14 states considered labeling bills. Currently there is a voluntary labeling program in Canada but no official requirements - however, consumer pressure can move mountains so let's keep the positive momentum going as consumers demand
- A 14 year study analyzing the economic benefit of growing genetically modified crops on a wide scale has found the farmers who decided not to grow them made more money.
From Jeffrey Smith: ' There has been an unprecedented awakening about GMO's in North America with more high profile news stories, consumer mobilization and the establishment of more non-GMO outreach groups. The institute of Technology taught over 750 people to become GMO speakers and over 100 events were held during Non-GMO month. Non-GMO food products are one of the fastest growing food trends so let's keep advocating for the quality of food we want."
