Not a JABBER? That Simply Can't Be!
Are all your friends JABBERS? Forward this newsletter and remind them to join our online grapevine!
|
DEAR JABBERS: Can you believe Father's Day is almost here? It probably comes as no surprise to learn that 93% of JABBERS are women. After all, in addition to being moms and business leaders, women are usually the social planners, house managers and camp directors of any given family. But that means 7% of our readers are men! And many of those men are dads. Not only do JABBERS love their dads, but dads love their JAB fixes, too ... even if they won't admit it. I know my dad and my husband both read every issue. (Thank you guys!)

So we would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the small but mighty contingency of JABBERS who deserve to be appreciated this Sunday. If you are a dad, have a dad, are married to a dad, or will one day be a dad, we wish you a very Happy Father's Day.
Happy Father's Day and Happy JABBING!

Sizzling Grilling Tips
From Brian Collaro, Whole Foods Market When you're firing up the grill this summer, make sure you follow these tips to make the most of your meals:
-Start with appetizers, like red bell peppers. Half a pepper lengthwise, remove the stem, seeds and membrane and place a nice size chunk of cheese in the middle. Slow cook the pepper and cheese until it is melty and delicious. Fontina and aged provolone work well. -Don't touch that meat - It seems natural to turn the steaks or flip the burgers over and over again, but don't. Wait for the juices to rise to the top and flip it once. -To get a nice sear, your grill has got to be hot. Then, maintain a moderate heat to cook through. Good color is great flavor. -Don't forget dessert. Grilled fruit makes an awesome dessert for a summer barbecue. Try pineapple, peaches, mango and strawberries. If you are grilling smaller fruits like strawberries, put them on a soaked bamboo skewer so they are easy to turn.

Sand Castle Building for Beginners
From Team JAB Building a sand castle with dad is buckets of fun! All you need are sand, water, household items, and some helping hands.
Instructions: -Draw a rough sketch of the castle you'd like to build. -Choose a square site near the water, but not so close that waves will destroy your castle as the tide comes up. -Dig a hole down to the water table, where the sand is dark and moist, or bring up large buckets of water from the ocean or lake. -Scoop wet sand onto the center of the area in which you'll be working. Work fast so the sand stays wet. -Build towers by forming and stacking sand patties about the size and shape of thick pancakes. Place larger patties on the bottom, and gently shake the patties from side to side as you pile them so that the sand settles. Seal your towers by gently pouring water over them. -Build walls to connect the towers of your castle by jiggling - gently shaking from side to side - wet sand into brick shapes and laying them on top of each other. -Carve the towers and the walls into shapes using tools such as a small trowel, a putty knife or plastic utensils. -Dig a moat around the castle to protect it from invaders. |
Summer Safety
From Team JAB During the warm summer months, we change the way we eat, the way we exercise and the way we have fun. To get the most out of summer, safety should be at the top of your list. Here are some tips to help you and your family to enjoy summer safely.
-Sun exposure. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher whenever you spend time in the sun, and reapply it as needed. Some sun screens fade with sweat.
-Insect repellents. Wear repellents, especially when hiking or camping, to prevent Lyme disease (spread by ticks) and West Nile virus (spread by mosquitoes). -Swimming. Even strong swimmers need adult supervision so be sure you watch your children. Insist on life jackets for children who can't swim. If you need to leave the pool area - even for a minute - take your children with you. Teach every child how to swim. Get professional training, but never rely solely on the swimming lessons to protect a child from drowning.
-Transportation. Children and adults should wear helmets when riding bicycles, motorcycles, skateboards or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). The most effective way to prevent head injuries is to wear a properly fitting helmet.
-Exercise. Keep yourself hydrated! Drink four to eight ounces of water before your activity and 12 to 16 ounces during each hour of your activity. Consider adding sports drinks if the activity will last longer than 30 minutes because they replace the sodium and potassium the muscles lose during exercise.
-Food. When serving cheese or mayonnaise-based cold salads, keep them chilled (40° F or below) until it's time to eat. Protein foods can spoil very easily when left to sit at room temperature. Discard food that has been out for more than four hours.
