Dear JABBERS:

You all frequently ask me where I got the nickname Boo. Well, Mother's Day is a good time to share the story with you, since my mother is the one who gave it to me. I will preface with a few pertinent pieces of information. One, my mother loves nicknames. Two, my birth name is Province. And finally, my older sister's name is Morgan. As you might imagine, we are both named after ancestors.

Like many mothers, my mom (Betty) loved to play Peek-A-Boo with Morgan and me when we were babies. We played it all the time. She would cover our little faces and we would laugh until we squealed. One day in my birth city of Cincinnati, when I was too young to remember, Betty covered my face and greeted me with a playful, "Peek-A-Boo!". I looked at her and responded with a giggly, "Peek-A-Mommy, Peek-A-Daddy,

Boo's Baby Picture

Peek-A-Morgan!" Just like that, I had given myself a nickname! While my mom was certainly entertained (okay, elated) by the fact that I thought Boo was my name, I gather she wasn't terribly surprised. You see, I had big, round blue eyes and a very funny-looking face. It was not uncommon for strangers to approach me and say, "BOO!", start laughing, and walk away.

Then one fateful day Betty took complete leave of her senses. What began as an innocent, joyful rite of passage between mother and daughter took a dramatic turn for the worse. We were out in public somewhere, and out it flew. Right out of Betty's little pink lips (to this day she still wears pink lipstick). She called me Boo. In front of other people. Non-immediate-family. It was As natural as honey. And the rest is history. I haven't been Province since that day.

So, that's the reason YOU all call me Boo. Not because I have the nickname, but because of that fateful day that the nickname took its first spin.

Whatever you're into this Mother's Day, whether it's Peek-A-Boo, or nicknames or nothing remotely related, I hope yours is filled with wonderful Mom stories, old and new.

Happy Mother's Day and Happy JABBING!

-Boo

Celebrate National Mobility Awareness Month
From Glenneisha Darkins: REPLY
When I was in college at Florida A&M University, I caught a ride home to visit family for Thanksgiving. That ride changed my life forever. The car I was riding in was involved in a tragic rollover accident that left me as a vent-dependent quadriplegic. Before my accident, I was very active, with basketball being my favorite sport. While my new reality is challenging, it hasn't stopped me from  pursuing my dreams. I am enrolled at Florida International University as a pre-public administration student and am constantly reminded by my friends and family to be thankful to be able to accomplish my goals despite my current condition. May is National Mobility Awareness Month and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association is celebrating local heroes all across North America. They will be giving away three Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles to a caregiver, veteran or person with a disability that is dealing with or overcoming mobility challenges. So, JABBERS, I ask you to get moving and vote for me as a local hero because a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle will change my life. To vote for me, click HERE. Thank you!*

Leaving the West, Heading East, Looking to Settle in Broward
From Tammy Akerman: REPLY
I am leaving Los Angeles for a job in Plantation. I am single, 38 years old and have two large dogs: a 65-pound, nine-year-old lab and a 35-pound, eight-year-old Vizla, both very sweet. I'm looking for a pet-friendly community with welcoming neighbors who are pet owners too, where I can safely walk my dogs at night. I'm looking to meet people with similar interests and would like to live 20 minutes from work. What is the best area for me? Ft. Lauderdale? Hollywood? Plantation? Somewhere else? The more specific the better! Thank you JABBERS.
