Dear Corporate Members,

For our Navy League team at headquarters, the summer months have been filled with corporate outreach, training, and planning for 2012. We are expanding our senior engagement opportunities to include additional Speaker series, support of Navy Safe Harbor and Wounded Warrior Regiment events, STEM engagement for our Councils, and of course, enhancing Sea-Air-Space in every possible way.

The 250 Navy League Councils have been doing what they do best through the summer. We often say that the best work of the Navy League takes place in cities and small towns around the world, and that's why we are all here. In this issue of The Anchor, we will highlight some of the amazing things our councils have done this year.

As always, thank you for your support and dedicated spirit for the men and women of our Sea Services.

Sincerely,

Dale "Kid" Lumme

National Executive Director

NCC Award

WASHINGTON - Navy League National Capital Council President  Charlie McCullough and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp presented West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller the 2010 Commodore Ellsworth P. Bertholf Award in the Russell Senate Office in Washington July 28, 2011. The award is presented each year to recognize one congressional leader for his or her long-term vision and support of Coast Guard personnel and for promoting America's maritime safety and security. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Patrick Kelley.)

The National Capitol Council sponsored its annual Navy League tournament at the Army Navy Country Club on Monday June 27, 2011.  It was a complete success, with more than 120 golfers (30 foursomes) playing in the event.  Because of ANCC's location near the Pentagon the participation by active duty flags and other service members was at an all time high.  The winning team was the Honeywell team led by Mike Seifert, Jim Romano, Ed Fortunato and Gerry Sherm.

The council raised more than $8,000 for the scholarship fund for those children whose parents are serving in the sea services.  The council is grateful for all the corporations who sponsored the dinner buffet, holes and those that contributed dozens of golf balls for the event

Upcoming events sponsored by National Capital Council Navy League include presentation of the Annual Sea Services Award to Congressman Todd Akin (Missouri) on September 14, the Sea Services Leadership Dinner Cruise on the Odyssey September 30th, and the annual Navy Birthday Ball on October 14th. For info on any of these events, contact Joan Jones, nccnl@aol.com, or see our new website: www.navyleaguedccouncil.org. We're also on Facebook! Fleet Week Seattle, MooseSeattle Fleet Week, Mariners

For ten years the Seattle Council has played a significant role in the organizing of Seafair Fleet Week and Tom and Diane Jaffa have served as Co-Chairs of Fleet Week Events for nearly 10 years. Seattle Council Representatives are involved in nearly all aspects of planning for the ship arrival, including securing berthing space & funding and organizing nearly a dozen events. For the second time, Navy League Seattle was featured in the Greenwood Parade. The Jaffas, along with Navy League members, Miss Seattle Navy League and Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar, who was the Grand Marshall were pleased to participate. (See photos)

By all accounts, Seattle Fleet Week 2011 was the best ever! 7 USN, USCG and Canadian Ships participated in the Annual Parade of Ships and over 20,000 local citizens visited the ships during their stay in Seattle. For the first time in our recollection, the Canadian Coast Guard joined with their Navy counterparts in sending an asset to participate in the Parade of Ships which included a "Search and Rescue Demonstration" by the US Coast Guard. In conjunction with the Centennial of Naval Aviation (CoNA) an aviation display was also included.
