 ~ STEM Survey ~

 (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

The survey below will take approximately 5 minutes of your time and will assist us greatly to understand what resources and interest level we have and in which locations as we contemplate what level and type of support is achievable by the Navy League.

The United States has a national problem in STEM education and SECNAV Ray Mabus indicates that the problem is magnified in the Department of the Navy.   Our highly technical sea services depend on technical literacy among Sailors and Marines at all levels.  The US ranks middle to bottom in many categories in most studies (2010 Report: Rising above the Gathering Storm).  Specifically, the US ranks 48th in the world in K-12 STEM education.  The essence of this dynamic problem is the annual shortfall of STEM graduates is increasing at an alarming rate.  For more information about STEM please see SEAPOWER magazine (May 2011, page 32).

The Navy League is organizing an approach to work with the US Navy and other organizations to help solve this problem.  We need your help.  We need more information from the membership of the Navy League.

Senior Navy officials and nonprofit leaders have told the Navy League that several gaps exist that the Navy League appears well positioned to fill.  Professionals with STEM backgrounds who have served in the US military and are willing to serve as mentors to some of the kids as part of structured programs are an immediate need.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to help us so that we can ultimately offer national STEM programs that the Navy League membership can participate. Click here to take survey.

Thank You,

Dale Lumme

Navy League Elects
Next National President
Phil Dunmire Picture

During the annual Board of Directors' Meeting in Washington, DC, Phil Dunmire was elected National President-elect of the Navy League of the United States. He will officially assume his position in October of 2011.

As the incoming National President, Mr. Dunmire's primary objective is to encourage the current membership of 50,000+ volunteers to take a more active role in supporting the mission of the Navy League. From a corporate perspective, he is committed to making the necessary investment to continue to grow the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition. Additionally, Mr. Dunmire recognizes the imperative of providing corporate members an improved Return on Investment and is working closely with the Corporate Relations team to enhance corporate benefits.

Phil Dunmire has been a Navy League volunteer for 23 years and a National Director for 16 years. He served as National Vice President of Youth Programs as well as National Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Development. He is a retired banker having served as President and CEO of First Wisconsin Trust Company of Florida and Chairman and CEO of Merchants Bancorp of Pennsylvania.

In 1967, Mr. Dunmire enlisted in the United States Army. He served on active duty for 4 years, and then spent 7 years in the active Army Reserve where he served as a Company Commanding Officer, Battalion Executive Officer and Brigade Commander. He also served in numerous leadership roles in many other non-profit organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, The Mercersburg Academy, and the Palm Beach Nurse Foundation.

Washington Examiner

Navy League Partners with

The Washington Examiner

The Navy League of the United States has formed a partnership with The Washington Examiner  and washingtonexaminer.com with a focus on celebrating our maritime services and the tremendous job they do contributing to the defense of the United States and growing our membership rolls.  With a Sunday readership of more than 346,000 metro-DC residents, The Washington Examiner provides Navy League and our corporate gold and business associate members with a tremendous opportunity to expand awareness of the importance of our sea services and the companies that help train and equip them to fight and win.  It is also a terrific opportunity for the Navy League to educate a broad audience on the vital role our Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. flag Merchant Marine team plays in providing our county's security and economic stability.

Over the next year, NLUS will partner with The Washington Examiner team to develop first class pull out sections around a series of calendar events that are significant to the sea services and the Navy League.  This will include the Coast Guard Birthday (July 31), Navy Birthday (October 9), Marine Corps Birthday (November 10), a special Christmas salute to the troops (December 25), a special Sea-Air-Space edition (April 15), a Memorial Day edition (May 27), and a Merchant Marine Birthday edition (June 10).  NLUS will provide the editorial content and has final approval on the layout and edits.

We enthusiastically encourage area defense contractors, businesses, retailers, and veterans organizations to participate with Navy League in saluting our maritime services by advertising in the pull-out specials.
