Legislative Affairs Update

The Navy League was an official sponsor of the Second Annual Maritime Industry Sail-In, which took place on Capitol Hill on May 4, 2011. The Sail-in allowed advocates of the Maritime Industry, including representatives from domestic ocean carriers, terminal operators and labor unions from all over the country to come to Washington to meet with Representatives and Senators and give voice to the issues most important to the Maritime Industry. With over 180 participants conducting over 90 meetings in Congressional offices, this year's Sail-In was a great success.
On Wednesday, April 13th the Navy League of the United States hosted a Congressional Breakfast at the annual Sea Air Space Exposition at National Harbor, Maryland. In attendance was Congressman Joe Courtney from the 2nd District of Connecticut who is a member of the House Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus. The Congressman spoke about the need to provide and maintain the platforms and resources our Sea Services require to execute their mission and thanked the Navy League for their support. Also in attendance were many Congressional staff, the Navy and Marine Corps legislative affairs offices, members of the Navy League Legislative Affairs Advisory Board, as well as Navy League National President Dan Branch.
The month of May will see the lots of action from Congress regarding major defense legislation. The Navy League will be monitoring the mark-up of the National Defense Authorization by the House Armed Services committee in the coming weeks. The Navy League will then be following will be the mark-up of the authorization from the Senate Armed Services Committee as well as the Defense Appropriations bills from the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. These pieces of legislation are critical to ensuring the men and women of our sea services are properly outfitted with the platforms, gear, and policy necessary to complete their missions. |
