Greetings!

I was recently interviewed for a community TV show to talk about the museum and its value to Vancouver. The experience prompted me to reflect more deeply than is usual on the realities of managing a museum such as the VMM: a delicate balance of resources and realities against a backdrop of challenges that would make the most seasoned of CEO's pause for serious thought.

And then there are the visitors. Watching engrossed guests move through the museum and later reading their comments reminds me of why I do this and the importance of maintaining those balances and meeting those challenges.

Thank you for your support - if you haven't had a chance, be sure to visit Chátwilh: The Craft and Culture of the Squamish Canoe and News of the Titanic - our two current temporary exhibitions. It is my hope that the visit will enhance and inform your intimate experience of living and working in this coastal city. Judge for yourself the value of such a thing and then fill in a comment card.

Sincerely,

Simon Robinson

Executive Director

Small Canoe

For countless generations, Squamish people hunted, fished, gathered resources, engaged in battle, and welcomed visitors from their canoes. Across the region that would become Vancouver, these were the vehicles that literally bound together life on the land and sea. This special exhibition will take visitors through the lifecycle of a Squamish canoe-from its roots in a stand of local temperate rainforest, through the hands of Squamish craftsmen, and throughout the Salish Sea. Squamish carvers are renowned for crafting seven types of specialized canoes. Discover how these watercraft continue to connect the Squamish people to each other and the wider world.
