Greetings!

When I joined the Maritime Museum in April 2010 I was joining an organization with a turbulent recent past and an uncertain future. Naturally, this was manifested in low morale, mission fatigue and a facility in need of some TLC.

It was critically important to create positive change. With this in mind I contacted Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation who graciously agreed to visit the museum with other cultural representatives in order to perform a traditional cleansing ceremony.

The visit was a powerful and emotional experience for all concerned as our Squamish brothers and sisters toured throughout the museum and collection, drumming, singing and performing the ceremony. The positive energy created that morning was palpable and we feel it still. One year later and the Maritime Museum is well positioned for a very bright future with an energised crew and a raft of successes already under our belt.

I am pleased and proud to tell you that our partnership with the Squamish Nation continues with the opening of Chátwilh: The Craft and Culture of the Squamish Canoe on November 10th. This is not to be missed-come and be a part of the continued renewal of your Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Sincerely,

Simon Robinson

On Saturday October 15 from  2:00-3:30 pm the Vancouver Maritime Museum will host a presentation and book signing by writer, maritime historian, photographer and field archaeologist Rick James. Rick will talk about his recently released book West Coast Wrecks and Other Maritime Tales. More information about the book is available in the programs section of our website.

Upcoming Exhibit - Chátwilh: The Craft and Culture of the Squamish Canoe For countless generations, Squamish people hunted, fished, gathered resources, engaged in battle, and welcomed visitors from their canoes. Across the region that would become Vancouver, these were the vehicles that literally bound together life on the land and sea. This special exhibition will take visitors through the lifecycle of a Squamish canoe-from its roots in a stand of local temperate rainforest, through the hands of Squamish craftsmen, and throughout the Salish Sea. Squamish carvers are renowned for crafting seven types of specialized canoes. Discover how these watercraft continue to connect the Squamish people to each other and the wider world. OPENS NOVEMBER 10th.
