Greetings!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for "An Evening at the Museum" on August 6th - it truly was a night of fun, food, fireworks and of course fundraising!

This annual event is integral to our ongoing fundraising efforts and I am happy to report that this year we collectively raised $23,500. This money will help to ensure the ongoing operation of the museum and we make sure that every penny of it makes a difference. We take nothing for granted and work hard to squeeze as much value as we possibly can out of your generous contributions.

So a very sincere thank you again to our guests, sponsors, contributors and volunteers for your wonderful support, encouragement and enthusiasm-together we are making the museum strong and secure for the future.

Sincerely,

Simon Robinson

Upcoming Exhibit in the TK Gallery - VOYAGES

VOYAGES features a selection of exquisitely detailed paintings from maritime artist and illustrator, Gordon Miller. Miller has combined his artistic talent with his passion for maritime history and the ships and men that first ventured into unknown oceans in these paintings.    Discovery off Hawaii

The exhibit features a selection of paintings that appear in Miller's new book VOYAGES: To The New World and Beyond which will be officially launched at the exhibit opening reception. The paintings begin with the Norse in the first millennium and end in the eighteenth century with the arrival of the first European sailors to  our coast.

VOYAGES Opens September 25

What we have been doing...
Last month was busy! Our Canada Day Open House attracted a lot of happy visitors to the Museum. We raised more than $900 in donations in one day! The Museum was invited to provide a children's' boat building craft at the City of Vancouver's official 125th Anniversary Celebration in Stanley Park. Lineups of families snaked around the tent waiting their turn to build a tall ship. More than 500 tall ships were built!

Canon
Can you help us identify this cannon?
Found: A Blast From the Past
Our collections department has been very busy this summer installing a new shelving system in our offsite storage area. While reorganizing they came across a ship's cannon hidden behind another large object. Our records indicate that the cannon was found in Victoria harbour. The cannon has a tapered body with three raised rings set equidistant apart at intervals along its length. The breech of the cannon has a ring with remnants of a chain through it. The surface of the cannon is heavily corroded however set into the surface are various markings
including what appears to be a date (1811). We have posted more photos including a description of the markings on our Facebook Page photos page. Can you help us identify the origin or name of the cannon?

Let us know what you come up with.
