The Disability and Communication Access Board, Sprint Relay Hawaii, and Pacific ADA Center is proud to announce "The Power and Influence of Accessible Communication" to be held at the Japanese Cultural Center - Manoa Grand Ballroom on March 16, 2011 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The conference is similar to our previous "Communication is Key" conference in November 2003. Eight years ago, the conference showcased the latest in communication tools for people with communication disabilities. Since 2003, technology has drastically changed the lives of people with disabilities allowing for full integration, independence and quality of life.
The March 16th conference will also showcase the latest in communication tools, as well as workshops on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) updates, 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, and effective advocacy for people with disabilities.

A: Effective March 15, 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice defines auxiliary aids and services as:
1) Qualified interpreters on-site or through video remote interpreting (VRI)
2) Notetakers
3) Real-time computer-aided transcription services
4) Written materials
5) Exchange of written notes
6) Telephone handset amplifiers
7) Assistive listening devices
8) Telephones compatible with hearing aids
9) Closed caption decoders, open and closed captioning including real-time captioning
10) Voice, text, and video-based telecommunications products and systems, including text telephones (TTYs), videophones, and captioned telephones, or equally effective telecommunications devices
11) Videotext displays
12) Accessible electronic and information technology
13) Or other effective methods of making aurally delivered information available to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing
13) Qualified readers
14) Taped texts
15) Audio recordings
16) Brailled materials and displays
17) Screen reader software
18) Magnification software

Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS)
The Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS) was established in 2000 and offers sign language interpreters who do not hold national certification an opportunity to obtain credentials valid within and recognized by the State of Hawaii. The Disability and Communication Access Board congratulates the following sign language interpreters who recently passed the HQAS.Nora Sanford, Level III Lorraine Suankum, Level III Jennifer Blohm, Level IV Laura Safranski, Level IV The HQAS/HQAS+H is scheduled four (4) times a year. The next two tests are scheduled on:February 7 & 8, 2011
April 11 & 12, 2011
