Annual Fund

The Annual Fund needs your help! Small class sizes permit the exceptional teachers at GHA to give your child the SPECIAL attention you expect. But small class size also means that a successful Annual Fund requires 100% participation. Your generous support secures continued access to the tools of academic success for your child. Make sure your child's class helps GHA earn the challenge grant offered by the GHA Board: over $700 for each class that reaches 100% participation! Give to GHA NOW!

Head of School Search

The search process for the new Head of School to succeed Bruce Shoup when his Interim Head contract concludes in June 2012 is well underway. If you haven't had the opportunity to do so, we invite your participation in this process in a variety of ways:
1. Take a look at our "Opportunity Statement" on the school's web site under "Head of School Search", the 4th tab down on the left. It is a description of who we are as a school community, what our strengths and challenges are, and what qualities we are looking for in the school's next leader.
2. Read the article on the calendar for the search process on page 4 in the Summer 2011 edition of The Bridge (available on the school web site by clicking on the tab "About Us").
3. Talk to a Search Committee member: Jeff Funk (5th grade teacher), Sheila Walther (2nd grade teacher), Cristina McDougall (1st/2nd grade parent, and in the office Mon-Wed), Jim Kelly (4th grade parent), Tina Myers (K/3rd grade parent and Board of Directors President), Elizabeth Gray (K parent, Search Committee Head), or Bruce Shoup (ex-officio advisor to the committee).
4. Let us hear your voice via email(searchinput@gigharboracademy.org) or via a note in an old-fashioned comment box in the office.
We have had a robust response for candidate applications, including interest from all corners of the United States, multiple counties in Washington, and a mix of backgrounds in private schools, public schools, and business management. The committee is accepting applications through October 14th and plans to make an initial "cut" to 6-8 candidates for semifinalist status no later than October 22, with initial interviews to follow in early November. Exciting times for shaping the future of Gig Harbor Academy!
Elizabeth Gray, Head Search Committee Chair

Preschool and First Grade Celebrates Rosh Hashana

Rosh Hashanah (ראש השנה) is the Jewish New Year. It falls once a year during the month of Tishrei and occurs ten days before Yom Kippur. Together, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as the Yamim Nora'im, which means the Days of Awe in Hebrew. In English they are often referred to as the High Holy Days. To celebrate the Jewish New Year, first grade visited preschool and baked challah bread and dipped apples in honey. These traditional foods are eaten on Rosh Hashanah - challah dipped in honey (symbolizes the hope for a sweet new year) as well as desserts made with honey and fruit, like apples. The preschoolers and first graders also made New Year's Cards to be given to their loved ones.
