Johnny Appleseed Day

Johnny Appleseed Day

The rain didn't slow down the festivities that took place on Monday, Sept. 26th, when students in Prekindergarten through 5th grade celebrated Johnny Appleseed's Birthday. Older students were grouped with younger students and worked together in teams to cycle around to the various centers. They made apple juice with an Johnny Appleseed Dayapple press, played apple BINGO, weighed and measured apples, learned all about Johnny Appleseed by watching a Brain Pop video, used the apple peeler/slicer/corer machine to peel apples and then measured to see who can get the longest continuous peel (of course using those wonderful math measuring skills), they did fun apple worksheets, and made delicious applesauce.

Field Trip Driver Requirements
Cat Driving
Field trips are an integral part of the school's academic program. The number and type of field trips taken varies by grade level, but all trips relate to areas being studied in the classroom. Parents are our main source for transportation on field trips. As a volunteer on field trips, parents are asked to provide a copy of their driving record and a copy of their proof of insurance card (the office is happy to make copies for you). All of these documents need to be on file in the school office before you will be allowed to volunteer to drive on a field trip. Your driving record can be obtained by going to the Department of Licensing website. There is a charge of $10 per driving record. Thank you.

She would like each student to have their own which will be earbudskept at school in a plastic bag labeled with the students name. If you have some spare ones that you are willing to donate she would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Class Spotlight
Kindergarten Paleontologists
Dinosaur DigFifth graders buried "dinosaur bones" for the kindergartners to dig up in the school's first archeological dig of the year. The young kindergartner paleontologists carefully dug up their treasures and then cleaned them with brushes. With the help of the fifth grade class they mapped the location of where each artifact was found. Dinosaur Dig

There will be several other archeological digs throughout the year, all with the help of the fifth graders.  The first graders will dig up ancient Egyptian artifacts and Mr. Funk will bury colonial relics for the fifth grade class.

First/Fifth Grade Buddies
GHA Legos
This week first and fifth grade students joined together for some "Buddy" time to practice their math skills with Lego challenges. They first had to build "GHA" that had to be exactly 4" wide by 5" tall. Next the buddies had to build  a Lego wall with the specifications of 7.5" wide by 3" tall which needed to include one door and one window. All of the walls were connected together to GHA Legoserect a unique building. The last mission was to build a Lego replica of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge that could withstand the weight of a regular size soccer ball. Each row of Legos used to build the bridge cost a different amount of money and the students had to keep track of how much their bridge cost to build. Their bridges had to be safe and sturdy, but also at the lowest cost possible.
