Did You Know? | |
Jeff Funk (5th grade teacher) was able to secure a mini-grant from the NOAA B-WET to support a half-day trip aboard the Indigo, a 50 year old tug boat that is docked in Oak Harbor, for the 3rd through 5th grade students. On Monday, February 7th they will be picked up in Gig Harbor for a trip around the Puget Sound on the historic Indigo tugboat. During their voyage the students will do water sampling and learn about navigation and early Puget Sound history. We are thrilled for this opportunity to participate in this meaningful watershed education experience. Bon Voyage!

Baby Shower | |
Thank you to all who attended the Open House Baby Shower held for Sheila Walther and Lynn Swanson on Friday, January 7th. It was great to see some past and current families come to celebrate our two teachers during this very exciting time in their lives. Sheila was missed, but we were all very thankful that both her and baby were resting well in the hospital. We were thrilled that Lynn was able to join us for snacks, delicious cake, coffee, and gift giving festivities. We will keep you informed when her little bundle of joy finally arrives! A big thank you to SFN for throwing this shindig, for Cristina McDougall for organizing it, and Mary Wotherspoon for the beautiful cake that she baked and decorated herself!

Prekindergarten - Coconut Tree
Prekindergarteners want you to see their coconut tree! Each child in the classroom has a coconut on the tree with their name on it. To get a star placed on their coconut they must finish their "Numbers for Me" paper by tracing and writing the numbers 1 to 10 on the front and then flipping over the paper writing the numbers again 1 to 10 with no mistakes or reversed numbers. By the end of the school year these prekindergarteners will be writing their numbers to 30 and beyond! Way to go kids!

Kindergarten - Our Bodies
This week the kindergarten class is studying the human body. This unit consists of learning the purpose of all organs and studying the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and digestive systems. Math, science, and language are all integrated within this topic.During this unit, the students traced their bodies on a piece of white paper, and then cut them out so that they had a full body cut out of themselves. Next, they placed paper organs and skeleton parts in the appropriate places. For math, the kids had to calculate and then measure the length of what a child's intestine would be.....the paper intestine measured approximately 15 feet! How does all that fit into such tiny bodies?!?
