Join Real Food For Kids an Keynote Speaker Chef Ann Cooper at George Marshall High School, Falls Church at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 23 to celebrate Food Day.

Panel discussion of health and nutrition experts will discuss how school food contributes to the public health crisis and create impediments to learning, and will also discuss models of successful change in public school systems.  Panelists include Chef Ann Cooper; Chef Nora Pouillon; Katherine Bishop, nutritional policy specialist at Center for Science in the Public Interest; Chef Ed Kwitowski, Director of School Food Services for DC Central Kitchen; and, Natalie Sikka, MD - Obesity specialist in pediatric gastroenterology. 
 
High School culinary challenge - students from Fairfax County High School culinary arts programs are invited to send teams to compete in a challenge to create a fresh, nutritious salad bar that meets USDA National School Lunch Program guidelines.

Greetings!

 

Please join us for our first FCCPTA General Membership meeting on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 7:30 PM; these meetings are open to the public, however only the official local PTA representative is allowed to participate in the business portion of our meeting.  Our meetings are held at FCPS Gatehouse Administration Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church 22042.  Our general meetings are held in the 1st Floor Café.  Please park in the underground garage and take the elevator up to the 1st floor. Dan Parris will attend the October 3 FCCPTA meeting in Dr. Dale's place to gather parent input on our Race to the Top grant.

 

The topic of this meeting is Social Media and how PTAs can benefit from this tool. Catherine S. Read, owner, Creative Read, Inc. will Creative Read, Inc. be our keynote presenter.  Catherine's experiences as a Marketing Consultant will help provide you with ideas to implement with your PTA.  In addition to this presentation, we will have a brief business meeting and update from FCPS.  In addition to Catherine's expertise, we will share other best practices and information on where/how to access important educational information here in Fairfax.

2012-2013 Proposed Legislative Program
 
The 2012-2013 Virginia PTA Proposed Legislative Program (PLP) is now available.  Please distribute the PLP and Get Out The Vote.  Results are due to Northern Virginia District PTA by October 23, 2012.  Use the tally sheets available on the Virginia PTA website (link is above) or the Northern Virginia District PTA website, or just email results to novadistrictplp@gmail.com.

Safe Routes to School

International Walk to School Day:  Wed., Oct. 3

Last year 25 FCPS schools participated in International Walk to School Day and this year the goal is to to double that number.  In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to include more than 4,000 events across all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.  Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.  Please register today at www.walkbiketoschool.org.

FCCPTA's Second Annual Emerging Minority Leader's Conference is Saturday, November 17 at Mount Vernon High School's Bratten Hall. Registration starts at 8:30 AM.  Voluntary donation of $5 is requested.

Important Information from the Fairfax County Office of Elections

Are You Election Ready for Nov. 6?

Check Your Voter Registration!

Check your registration online at https://www.voterinfo.sbe.virginia.gov or call the Fairfax County Office of Elections at 703-222-0776. 

 

You must update your voter registration if you have moved or changed your name, or you may not be able to vote. Every registered voter in Virginia is receiving a new voter registration card this fall. Make sure you read it and note the location of your polling place, which may have changed due to redistricting. 

 

The deadline to register to vote or make changes to your registration is Oct. 15.

 

There are new Voter Identification Rules.  Registered voters need to show at least one form of identification.  Click HERE to see the acceptable forms of identification.  Any voter who does not have identification required by state or federal law must vote a provisional ballot.

Bullying Prevention 101, Fairfax Partnership for Youth

The FPY Bullying Prevention Team will roll out Bullying Prevention 101, a tool to create a community of respect, this fall.  Bullying Prevention 101 is being created for adults and youth in the community, from businesses to faith groups to rotary clubs to PTAs to schools, etc.  This education tool includes videos, 
Fairfax  Partnership for Youth
role-playing scenarios, valuable handouts and interactive questionnaires with the goal to change the culture of bullying in NOVA.  Check out one of the videos to be included in the program highlighting how bystanders can take a stand against bullying.

 


Parent Resource Center (PRC) Workshops & Events

 

The FCPS PRC offers information, resources, and training opportunities through the Parent Academy, Educator Connection, and Community Link. These programs place parents, educators, and the community at the center of training opportunities and support the skills needed to participate effectively as partners in the education process for children. Support is also provided through confidential consultations, meetings, and training opportunities. Individuals can walk-in, call, schedule tours or meetings, and email the PRC for help. All PRC library materials, workshops, training programs, and consultations are free-of-charge.

 

The PRC sponsors workshops, except where otherwise noted, online or by calling The Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941.
