This is an occasional newsletter intended to provide PTA leaders, school and community leaders informed about events of interest to parents, teachers, and administrators. FCCPTA General Membership Meeting
Please join us for the next FCCPTA General Membership Meeting Tuesday, January 24 at FCPS Headquarters starting at 7:00 PM. Please plan to send two representatives. Up to two people from each PTA can vote. On the agenda: FCCPTA Audit and Budget discussion.
A presentation on Honors Courses and the current motion before the FCPS School Board is also on the agenda. For information, please visit the following websites: Subject: Possible High School English and Social Studies Honors Courses for 2012-13 School Year The School Board is scheduled to take a vote on whether or not to approve high school English and Social Studies honors courses be offered on site, if sufficient enrollment, through the 12th grade for all courses beginning with the 2012-13 school year and that the 2012-13 Standard Course Offerings Catalog be amended accordingly.
The Board also agreed to add the topic of honors courses to the January 23, 2012, work session schedule, for a discussion, and schedule action by the Board at the January 26, 2012, regular Board meeting.
General Membership Meetings are open to all PTA members and the public.

Virginia PTA Advocacy Training & PTA Day at the General Assembly
 Join the Virginia PTA for Advocacy Training on Sunday, January 22 at the Holiday Inn Koger Conference Center Richmond, 1021 Koger Center Boulevard, Richmond. - Learn about legislation affecting public schools.
- Receive talking points for talking with legislators.
- Communicate with other PTA members & students from across the state.
Date: Sunday, January 22 Time: 2:00 to 4:00 PM Location: Holiday Inn Koger Conference Center Richmond, 1021 Koger Center Boulevard, Richmond.
Cost: Students FREE; Adults $5.00
After you learn about pending legislation and receive your talking points meet with your legislators in the General Assembly during PTA Day at the General Assembly on Monday, January 23.
Virginia PTA will have a quick review of the talking points at the Holiday Inn Koger Center from 8:00 to 8:30 AM on Monday, January 23.

Youth Mental Wellness Fair 2012 Sponsored by the Fairfax Partnership for Youth
 Fairfax Partnership for Youth is sponsoring the 2012 Youth Mental Wellness Fair on Saturday, February 25 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at West Springfield HS to celebrate youth mental wellness and our community's collective effort to connect youth to the resources they need to thrive.

Prevention Toolkit
Fairfax County and Fairfax County Public Schools is pleased to offer an exciting new resource that is available to Fairfax County community organizations and parents. This new resource is the Prevention Toolkit. In short, the Prevention Toolkit is collection of suggestions, tools, and resources to assist families, school staff, PTA's, community- and faith-based organizations, social clubs, and others in promoting the well-being of youth in our community. The toolkit is focused on 5 key areas: mental health (depression and suicide), bullying and cyber-bullying, physical activity and nutrition, teen dating abuse, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. In addition, at the same website, you can find general and topic specific Fairfax County Youth Survey results from the 2010 survey. Please share this information with your PTA communities. Parent Resource Center Workshops  The Parent Resource Center of the Fairfax County Public Schools promotes parent awareness of the services provided by the Fairfax County Public Schools for children with special needs and their families. The Center encourages parent participation in the educational decision-making process and provides seminars, training programs, and information to foster the parent/professional partnership. The Center also serves as a resource for educators and the community.
Note: When schools are closed, or if there is a late opening or early closing due to inclement weather, workshops are cancelled and will we rescheduled at a later date for selected workshops.
