FCCPTA Special Education Committee Meeting
All FCPS schools are invited to a meeting of the Fairfax County Council of PTA's Special Education Committee on Monday, November 28, 2011; 7:00 - 8:45 pm at the Gatehouse Administration Building, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, 22042, 1st floor conference room (parking is available in garage under the Gatehouse building). The meeting will begin with a presentation: Power of the Patriot: Disability Resources at GMU- Did you know that George Mason University has a special library collection for disabilities and assistive technology resources? Jackie Petersen, librarian at the Kellar Institute for Human Disabilities and Emily Fallings, coordinator of the Northern Virginia Assistive Technology Service (VATS) at George Mason University will give an introduction to the Kellar Library and its resources and demonstrate to parents how they can use the library's resources via VATS. Immediately following the presentation, the Special Education Committee will hold a brief business meeting and refreshments will be served. Please feel free to share the attached material to other interested Special Education Parents. Please RSVP by November 23 to Kelly Henderson Hagen at hendersonhagen@verizon.net with the name of attendees and the school represented. We look forward to seeing you on November 28. Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee Meeting
 The Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council (SPAC) provides a direct connection between the Superintendent and parents throughout the county. The SPAC is made up of PTA presidents from each FCPS school and meets four times a year to discuss education issues important to the community, such as the budget and testing.

Interactive Trauma Seminar

This interactive seminar is appropriate for anyone who needs a better understanding of how traumatic experiences affect mental health and behavior. It provides an overview of the pervasiveness and biological impacts of trauma, and guidance for those who interact with youth who may be experiencing its effects.
Facilitated by Felicia Kolodner and Scott Koenigsberg of Dominion Hospital.

Emerging Minority Leaders Conference
 Our first annual Emerging Minority Leaders Conference was a great success. More than 50 people were in attendance this past Saturday at Lake Braddock Secondary School. We also had several vendors and FCPS offices in the hallway outside the Lecture Hall.
Our presenters provided several files to share with our local unit PTAs: Our thanks to everyone who made this an outstanding event.

Prevention Toolkit
Fairfax County and Fairfax County Public Schools is pleased to offer an exciting new resource that is available to Fairfax County community organizations and parents. This new resource is the Prevention Toolkit. In short, the Prevention Toolkit is collection of suggestions, tools, and resources to assist families, school staff, PTA's, community- and faith-based organizations, social clubs, and others in promoting the well-being of youth in our community. The toolkit is focused on 5 key areas: mental health (depression and suicide), bullying and cyber-bullying, physical activity and nutrition, teen dating abuse, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. In addition, at the same website, you can find general and topic specific Fairfax County Youth Survey results from the 2010 survey. Please share this information with your PTA communities. Parent Resource Center Workshops  The Parent Resource Center of the Fairfax County Public Schools promotes parent awareness of the services provided by the Fairfax County Public Schools for children with special needs and their families. The Center encourages parent participation in the educational decision-making process and provides seminars, training programs, and information to foster the parent/professional partnership. The Center also serves as a resource for educators and the community.
Note: When schools are closed, or if there is a late opening or early closing due to inclement weather, workshops are cancelled and will we rescheduled at a later date for selected workshops. |
