Greetings!
This is an occasional newsletter intended to provide PTA leaders, school and community leaders informed about events of interest to parents, teachers, and administrators. Forward this information to the appropriate chairpersons or coordinators so that they can further inform potentially interested attendees. Reflections Deadline
Fairfax County Council's deadline date for collecting all local PTA winning entries is Thursday, November 10, 1 - 7 PM. The collection location is FCPS Gatehouse Administration Center, School Board Conference Room 1600 (1st floor), 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, VA 22042. Parking available in underground garage.
There are numerous changes to the processing of works this year. For Fairfax County Council, this means we do not have the convenience of having clusters coordinators; this means all schools will use the Thursday, November 10, 1 - 7 PM drop-off for their works. The works will be judged by clusters and winners will be honored at the cluster level. The only change is the drop off process.
There are several new changes from the National PTA mostly for submitting works to the next higher level. Please make sure you adhere to the new rules.
Please take the opportunity to participate in PTA E-Learning Reflections 101, an overview and how-to for local units on running PTA's popular Reflections program. (NOTE: The username and password located on the back of your membership card is required to take e-learning courses.)

Teens Encouraged To Have A Safe Halloween

Halloween is a festive time for children and youth, but the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County (UPC) wants to make sure teens stay safe and alcohol-free. The UPC and its Countywide Initiative to Reduce Underage Drinking task force are distributing to each of the county's public high schools graphic posters with the message: "Don't end up a sick pumpkin and ruin your night! Have fun and enjoy a safe and alcohol-free night."
"Halloween has become a popular night for some teens to abuse alcohol and roam neighborhoods with friends, and we want to encourage our youth to have fun without alcohol," said UPC Executive Director Diane Eckert.
Eckert also noted that "The scariest part about Halloween is that it also has become one of the most deadly because of drunk drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."
The Halloween flyer is available by clicking below. Please distribute the flyer to parents, teachers, students and others.
UPC is a nonprofit organization made up of more than 50 community partners and members, including the Fairfax County Public Schools and the Fairfax County Police Department. It is partially funded with a Drug Free Communities Support Program federal grant administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Mentoring Summit

Representatives of the local business community, mentoring program providers, and supporters of mentoring are all invited to attend this event on November 10, 2011, with keynote speaker Congressman Gerry Connolly.
Since 2009, the number of volunteer mentors available for youth in the northern Virginia community has dwindled as a direct result of the economic downturn. Fairfax Partnership for Youth, the lead local partner of the national mentoring partnership (MENTOR), is hosting a summit to highlight mentoring as a premier opportunity for the business community to engage with local school and community-based mentoring programs and have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of youth. Mentoring programs that meet national guidelines for best practices will be highlighted as potential partners for volunteer programs or corporate sponsorships.
