The Millie Award Recipient for May is Karen Prickett. Karen is the Director of Activities for Mission Healthcare's Firesteel Healthcare Center (FHCC). She has been employed at FHCC since June of 1976 and is known as the "jack of all trades" around the nursing facility. She is a CNA, has assisted in the social department, and has been known to bus a few tables for the dietary staff when needed.

Karen's associates refer to her as "hard working and dedicated" and "the calmest, upbeat person they know".  Karen "has a true servant's heart". She is caring, honest and flexible. Karen helps anyone that asks and keeps the residents happy. FHCC wishes they had "more Karens". Congratulations Karen!

Thank you for making SDHCA's Annual Spring Institute an overwhelming success! Even with all the informative and often inspiring speakers, the highlight for me was meeting the many Frontline Caregivers that attended.

These folks really are angels in my eyes, and hard working ones at that! They are the backbone of our Members' facilities. They are the ones that do the heavy lifting - both figuratively and literally. They hold their residents' hearts, and they hold their hands.  When the resident first arrives at the facility, the Frontline Caregivers help the residents make it their home. The Frontline Caregivers then get the privilege of seeing their residents "blossom" in their new home.

Frontline Caregivers know that their residents are their greatest treasures. What our Frontline Caregivers need to always know is how much we treasure them. Thank you for what you do everyday for our elderly and disabled South Dakotans!

Sincerely,

  marks sig

Osteoporosis Screening

Becky Dorner & Associates

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is an independent panel of private-sector experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine that conducts rigorous, impartial assessments of the scientific evidence and makes recommendations on the effectiveness of a broad range of clinical preventive services. The USPSTF: (1) Recommends screening for osteoporosis in women aged 65 years or older and in younger women whose fracture risk is equal to or greater than that of a 65-year-old white woman who has no additional risk factors, (2) Concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for osteoporosis in men.  To read more, click here.

Updated Heart Disease Prevention Guidelines For Women

American Heart Association

The updated guidelines for women focus on what works best in the "real world" vs. clinical research settings, consider personal and socioeconomic factors that can keep women from following medical advice and treatment, incorporate illnesses that increase heart disease risk in women (i.e. lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy complications), and help women and their doctors understand risks and take practical steps for the most effective prevention of heart disease and stroke. CDC: Deadly Superbug "C-Diff" Spreading

CDC

"You feel like you're not going to get better and you feel like you're dying," she said. According to the Centers for Disease Control, C-Diff kills thousands of people every year and that number is growing. "It's between three and six-fold more common than it was just ten years ago," explained Dr. Rocco Riccardi of Lahey Clinic. Antibiotics are the standard treatment, but that doesn't always work... the CDC blames a new strain of the bacteria for the increased cases of the bug.  To learn more, click here.

Bifocal and multifocal glasses can disrupt depth perception and could ultimately cause falls in the elderly, according to Australian researchers, who said that people who switched to single-lens glasses performed better on outdoor activities and stairs. However, the study found that some people experienced falls while switching to different glasses. Click here to read the article.

Girl Talk

Melissa, meet Governor Daugaard

Brandon Challenger

Is it possible that pregnancy makes you clueless?

Don't spit out your coffee just yet - it's not me that I refer to.

No, instead, this revelation came to me during the Bethany at the Meadows nursing home groundbreaking a few weeks back. It involved a couple of staff members from Bethany Meadows, our good-natured South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, and your local newspaper editor simply being in the right place at the right time.
