Moving Downtown Forward Public Forum - September 20

The Downtown Brunswick and Outer Pleasant Street Master Plan Implementation Committee invites you to continue the conversation with the next MOVING DOWNTOWN FORWARD public forum tomorrow 5:30-7:30pm, at the Brunswick Junior High School Cafeteria. Give your input on plans for Maine and Pleasant streets to calm traffic and make it more pleasant for bicyclists and pedestrians. Navigating Alaskan Waters: Natives, Science, and Politics - September 20

On Thursday from 4-5:30 pm in Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center, Bowdoin College, The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum will host a panel discussion featuring the leaders of the five Alaska animal commissions, charged with protecting relationships between Iñupiat and Yupik and the animals on which they rely. The discussion will center on the roles traditional knowledge, science, and policy play in stewarding marine mammal resources, protecting habitat, and ensuring availability and safety of country foods. Tech Meetup Brown Bag Lunch - Intro to Google Drive - September 21

CREA Community Nature Program, Project Squirrel - September 25

Ceremony to Mark the Restoration of the Mid Coast Hospital Nature Trail - September 27

Mid Coast Hospital will host a ceremony to mark the restoration of its Nature Trail and enhancement of its Healing Garden. The wooded trail, accessible through the hospital's Healing Garden and parking lots, offers more than 3,300 feet of prepared walking paths that patients, visitors, staff, and the community can use for exercise in a beautiful outdoor environment. The ceremony will take place in the hospital's Healing Garden, located directly behind the Café, Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. At the event, donors both past and present, will be honored for their contributions that helped to create these green spaces in 2001 and have assisted in enhancing them through the years. Frontiers of Music: Concert #5 - September 27

Frontiers of Music #5 will feature five improvised performances. Christopher Cathode weaves percussion, electronics, and amplified 'found-objects' - often abandoned medical and industrial devices - into a post-apocalyptic sonic landscape that brings to mind a landscape of abandoned factories and dwellings. Contrabass soloist Joshua DeScherer presents a virtuosic solo performance featuring extended techniques, and drawing upon the stylistic variety in Dr. DeScherer's musical background. Trumpeter Mark Tipton and shakuhachi player Phil James will play as a duo, blending the sounds of two culturally and sonically disparate wind instruments. Benb Gallagher (percussion), Nick Dentico (bass guitar), and Sequoia Leaf will play as a trio; and the lineup is rounded out by the Richard Nelson Imaginary Ensemble, a flexible and genre-bending ensemble that is able to explore a tremendous variety of music within a single performance. 10 x 10 Benefit Art Exhibit & Sale - September 28

The watercolor Pisa, A Different View by Maine artist Tim Banks has been chosen to represent the fifth annual 10 X 10 Benefit Art Exhibit & Sale. This painting is among 325 works that will be on exhibit and for sale at the event Friday, 5-8 pm at the Curtis Memorial Library and St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Pleasant Street. All artwork priced at $200 is framed and ready to hang. A Public Preview will be held September 27, 5-8pm and September 28, 12-3 pm. CREA Birds of Prey Program by Wind Over Wings - September 29

Farmers' Dinner at Six River Farm - September 30

Mid Coast Hospital is offering a FREE Tobacco Cessation Education and Support Group to assist individuals trying to quit tobacco. Classes will be held in the hospital's Community Resource Room (near the Emergency Department) 4:30-5:45 pm every Monday October 15 - November 5. The 4-part program, facilitated by Tobacco Treatment Specialist Marla Davis, will assist participants in making a strong quit plan and will provide tips on medications for quitting, changing habits, and managing stress through diet and exercise. The Theater Project, 14 School Street, begins its fall session with The Bully Plays production class for actors in grades 6-8. The classes focus on story and script and use improvisational techniques. Students learn to collaborate and take responsibility for their work while using their imaginations to problem solve. This collection of short plays will help confront the issue of bullying in a constructive and creative way. Classes meet September 17 - October 14, Mondays - Thursdays, and will be onstage October 12-14. The class fee is $300. Scholarships are available. Princes, Princesses and Dragons classes for actors in grades 3-5, start October 29 and run Mondays from 4-5 pm until December 17. These storytelling classes offer young actors the opportunity to learn techniques to turn stories they know into theater. The fee is $80. Knitters Needed! Mid Coast Hospital, in association with Families CAN! a program of Midcoast Maine Community Action, has launched its 2012 Click for Babies, Period of PURPLE Crying Caps Campaign. This campaign, part of a national initiative, educates parents and caregivers about the Period of PURPLE Crying, a normal, but frustrating period of increased crying all infants experience in the first few weeks and months after birth. Knitters and crocheters are invited to make purple colored baby caps, which will be will be distributed to parents of newborns at Mid Coast Hospital as a reminder of the dangers of shaking a newborn. Caps can be made using any pattern and in any shade of PURPLE, soft baby-friendly yarn. Caps are being collected at the Mid Coast Hospital Information Desk, at the MCH Walk-In Clinic at Brunswick Station, at Bath Savings on 105 Front Street in Bath and 3 Pleasant Street in Brunswick, and at the Midcoast Maine Community Action offices on 34 Wing Farm Parkway in Bath.
