Over the past several weeks, the BDA worked with Associated Press Travel Editor, Beth Harpaz, on a story about Brunswick. Beth drafted a wonderful article and it hit the wire last Friday. Music on the Mall Concert Series - TONIGHT

The Music on the Mall concerts continue. Tonight Apple Scruffs, a Beatles tribute band, will play at the Mall in Downtown Brunswick starting at 6 pm. Grab a blanket, bring your family and friends, order a picnic dinner or dine at a local Brunswick restaurant, then relax and enjoy great music. Moving Brunswick Forward Public Forum - July 30

The BDA hopes you will attend this public forum to provide input to Downtown's future. The Master Plan Implementation Committee will host "Moving Downtown Forward: a public forum on improving walking, biking, driving, and parking in Downtown Brunswick," Monday, 5:30-7:30 pm, in the School Superintendent's Meeting Room (Old Hawthorne School). The Committee wants input on plans for Maine and Pleasant streets to calm traffic and make it more pleasant for bicyclists and pedestrians. These plans include lane changes on Pleasant and Maine, bike lanes, raised crosswalks, and roundabouts. Help move Downtown forward. Come, learn more and share your thoughts. Brunswick Outdoor Arts Festival - August 18

The BDA's 6th Annual Brunswick Outdoor Arts Festival (BOAF) is just around the corner. This event will feature more than 90 juried artists and artisans displaying painting, sculpture, mixed media, graphics and drawing, photography and fine crafts. Taste of Brunswick - September 15 

Mark your calendars and plan to bring your family and friends to the BDA's Taste of Brunswick on the Town Mall. This special culinary experience will offer fabulous food, drink, music as well as the Fourth Annual Waiter's Race. Waitstaff from local Brunswick restaurants will demonstrate their agility and compete for a cash prize "tip". Many of the finest restaurants in the Brunswick area will  showcase their specialties. Bowdoin International Music Festival - through August 4th

Distinguished classical musicians from renowned chamber groups, orchestras, conservatories, and extraordinary young musicians will be featured in a wide array of concerts over six weeks. Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, including a two-concert appearance by Midori, who will perform all of Bach's unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas; and Claude Debussy, on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Hello Nature - through October 21

The Bowdoin College Museum of Art will host Hello Nature, a comprehensive exhibition showcasing more than 30 years of work from William Wegman, including photographs, videos, paintings and drawings - all of which were produced in or inspired by the state of Maine. Hysteria - July 25-28

Frontier will be showing Hysteria, a lighthearted romantic comedy that tells the surprising story of the birth of the electro-mechanical vibrator at the peak of the Victorian prudishness. Shakespeare's Macbeth on the Quad - July 26, August 2 & 9

Thursday at 6 pm, Bowdoin College will host a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth on the Quad in front of the Museum. Attendees are encouraged to bring along a lawn chair and/or blanket for seating on the Quad for this 70-minute show. Free Weight Loss Program Overview - July 26 & August 2

Mid Coast Hospital's Center for Weight & Lifestyle Change is offering two free info sessions to provide an overview of the popular weight loss program. Sessions will be held Thursday, July 26 2-3 pm and Thursday, August 2, 5-6 pm in the conference room adjacent to the Mid Coast Hospital Café, 123 Medical Center Drive. Designed to help individuals create a foundation for long-term weight loss and overall better health, the sessions will provide details about the 12-week program prior to enrollment, and offer FREE Body Mass Index (BMI) analysis, and open discussion with specialty staff members to help determine if this program is right for you. Frontiers of Music Concert Series: Concert #4 - July 26

Thursday at 7pm, the Frontier will host this concert featuring new chamber music and include world premieres of music by local composers Daniel Sonenberg and Joshua DeScherer. 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony - July 27

Bach, The Composer for All Times - July 28

Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way, will host composer Samuel Adler from the Bowdoin International Music Festival on Saturday at 1:30 pm. Mr. Adler will discuss Bach's influence on composers from 1835 to the present and will provide recorded illustrations. Novel Jazz Septet - July 28

The Novel Jazz Septet returns to Frontier, Saturday at 8pm, featuring the swing music of the great American composer, Duke Ellington, plus fellow co-composer, Billy Strayhorn. The band will highlight well-known tunes, plus rare, vintage gems, recently unearthed from the original scores at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. and reinterpreted. $13 in advance, $15 day of show. Learn How to Avoid Scams - July 31

Older adults lose millions of dollars to telephone scams each year. To create awareness of current scams and to learn how to better protect yourself, Larry Caruso, Senior Manager of Security at FairPoint Communications, will discuss scams on Tuesday at 1:30 pm at Thornton Oaks Retirement Community, 25 Thornton Way. Pear Trees for Peace Planting - August 1

Wednesday at 6:30 pm on the vacant lot at Mill and Cushing Streets, PeaceWorks will host a workshop and celebration as prelude to the 8th Annual Peace Fair. Two pear trees will be planted that will help beautify the area and also generate a perennial source of free food for residents and passersby. The Welcome - August 2

8th Annual Peace Fair - August 4

Join PeaceWorks on the Mall in Downtown Brunswick Saturday starting at 10 am for arts activities for children and adults; performances by local musicians; poetry writing and a Conversation Cafe where discussion will focus on ways to build a compassionate and sustainable society. This family friendly event is free of charge. Theater Project Alumni Week - August 6 - 12

The Theater Project's 40th Anniversary Season concludes this summer with Alumni Week, which will include performances, concerts, book signings, and even a chance for alumni to get back on stage to rehearse and perform an improvisational show. All events are FREE. The Theater will be open all week for people to stop in and visit. Tuesday, August 7 at 7 pm, Morgan Callan Rogers will read from her book Ruby Red Heart in a Cold Blue Sea. Alumni musicians will take the stage the next two evenings at 7:30 pm, with Cameron Toy performing Wednesday, August 8 and Ian Paige on Thursday, August 9. Friday, August 10 at 7:30 pm, alumni are invited back for a party and rehearsal, theater games, and figure out a show for the next evening. Saturday, August 11 at 11 am, alum David Covell will read from his children's book Rat and Roach, Friends to the End. Saturday evening at 8 pm, forty years of alumni will finally take the stage to perform their work from the night before. CHANS Home Health Care is offering FREE Hospice Volunteer training classes beginning September 6. The training classes will run for 10 consecutive weeks on Thursdays from 4-7 pm in the conference room at the Hospice Building at 45 Baribeau Drive. This free training prepares individuals to deal compassionately and sensitively with end-of-life issues in a volunteer capacity. A completed application and pre-training interview is required before being admitted to the program.
