BOOOOO - WHO???
This is the season of goblins and creepy creatures! And last week we talked to Sedalia Elementary teachers about a topic that's even scarier than witches on broomsticks and Dracula at your doorstep. It's the skeleton in the closet of "Unfunded Liabilities" that our lawmakers are (finally and hopefully) squaring off against.
All taxpayers, not just government workers, will have to battle this beast - soon. If you'd like to learn more about this creepy problem and what you can do about it, call or email to set up a speaking date at your school or organization. It's free and we need to know about this monster before it drains the blood from our budget!

Tip of the Month: The Nursing Home Squeeze
|
In last month's column, I told you about the superb estate planning conference I was able to attend at the UK School of Law in July. There was just too much to fit into one column - but I've saved the best for last.
Of the top five (maybe top three) issues people ask me about, protecting their life's savings from being eaten up by health care would definitely take a spot. But you can't wait until the last minute - you've got to plan way ahead to be truly prepared. Long-term care insurance is my first recommendation - but what if you didn't purchase it when you could afford it? We've got answers in this month's column - read it and then pass it along to someone you love.

As our regular readers know, food and cooking is a VIT (Very Important Topic) at Milestones. And from the popularity of our (Almost) Famous Recipes column, it is with our readers, too! As I mentioned in our July newsletter, my recipe box has morphed into a recipe room. In my search for a solution, I've found keeprecipes, a nifty site that allows me to link to recipes from other online sites, convert my handwritten recipes to the "cloud" so that I can access them from anywhere, and share with friends and family. This is not a project to be undertaken lightly and I searched through many good websites before settling on this one. If you're trying to go "paperless", keeprecipes could be your answer!
As for finding great recipes on a moment's notice, my son, Lee, turned me on to allrecipes. It now goes everywhere I do because it's one of the few apps that I find essential. Have mismatched ingredients sitting in the pantry and fridge? Type them into allrecipes and you'll have an assortment of dishes to choose from with hundreds of ratings and comments.
If you'd just like to read about food, try Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child by Bob Spitz. It begins with her ancestors and traces a life well lived. Bon Appetite!

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month:
Easy + Extravagant = Sexy
|
You read it right - this month we have accomplished an almost impossible feat. Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you in the center oven a dish that not only defies the laws of cooking in its simplicity but also renders diners speechless in its extravagance. This dish has been pronounced by none other than the Bobfather with a simply-spoken four letter word: Sexy. Him: "Honey, what's for dinner?" You: "Sexy Chicken." Him: "Umm...anything I can do to help???"
And this month you get a two-fer. In my quest to cook veggies that don't use a lot of fat, I stumbled across Roasted Crispy New Potatoes (again, just happened to have some in the fridge!) A little fidgeting on the original recipe produced some very fine and satisfying results. Now they don't steal the scene from the chicken in the "Extravagant" category, but they are simply easy as can be - and I hope you'll agree!

We are growing! Jessica Page began manning (or should that be womanning?) the front desk a couple of weeks ago. She'll greet you with a big smile, a warm hug, and a hot cappuccino when you come for a visit. We'll have more about Jessica next month. Michelle and I had a great NAPFA conference in Portland, Oregon at the beginning of September. Now she is on fall break deep in the heart of Texas (would you believe I first typed "Taxes"?) and, on Thursday, the Bobfather and I head to NYC for a conference put on by "the man", Nick Murray. I can hardly wait.
