Greetings!

April Fool I love April Fools' Day. It's just kind of fun to be compelled to make up silly tricks to play on other people who then pretend to be surprised.

Michelle and I thought a good April Fool's joke would be to send out our newsletter after April Fool's Day - because my desk looks like this >>>>>>>>>

Yes, that might be your income tax return in the pile...or is it under the desk...or in my shredder pile? APRIL FOOLS!!! It's just a stock photo!!! Or there a stranger sitting at James Koinis' desk?

Maybe that was a poor excuse for an excuse but wasn't it lots more fun than an apology for not being ready yesterday (or the same old TAX SEASON excuse)? A little innocent pretending can be good for the soul, don't-cha' think?

Fund Find(s) of the Month: The Non-Review

Thin ice Regular readers look to this section for a monthly suggestion  of one or more funds that I believe are worth a look the next time you mosey down the shopping aisle. With a tip of the hat to April Fools' Day, let's focus on how the market could be on the verge of making a mockery of your portfolio. I'm only the messenger but this warning comes from minds a lot deeper than mine. With things heating up, do you need to be on the lookout for thin ice?

Tip of the Month: How Does Your [401k] Garden Grow?

fresh tomatoes

Think of your 401k as your garden. How well do you tend it? Do you know what makes it thrive, when you need to pluck out weeds, and when to put away the pruning shears? Do you check your garden periodically to make sure the varmints are staying out of your tomatoes and rosebushes? Or is it a tangled mess? Use our five tips to harvest more green at retirement!

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month: Decadent Bribery

Yes, I know that most of you readers out there in the land of of the normal are thinking spring break, mowing yards, flower planting, can-I-fit-into-my-bathing-suit, strolling in the spring sun weather. In the meantime, my closet sits full of winter clothes that will be moved on April 18 (tax season lasts extra long this year) and our flower beds are filled with weeds that I'm convinced look rather...artistic.

We've got two things on our minds around here: filing tax returns on time and watching UK stomp Kansas in the championship game tonight. Maybe not in that order. And eating - don't forget the goodies. Tax season is when I make sure to find time to bring really good snacks to the office. I have this nightmare every April 1 that everyone has walked off the job. Then I wake up and make a batch of these babies knowing they will help keep the natives at their desks for at least a couple more weeks.

Your April Recommended Resources:

We're focusing on radio/music/listening apps this month, so if you're not an iPhone, Android, or iPad owner, save yourself some time and read one of the other articles. I'm a big talk radio junkie, beginning with Bill Bennett each morning at 5am. Here are some of my fav's:
  • TuneIn Radio - this free app, available for Apple and Android, lets you both pause and record. You can search music, talk radio, and all in-between. This is my most-used app.
  • Pandora- this service, based upon the Musical Genome Project, lets you set up your free Internet account and listen by computer or phone. Create a personalized station, searching by artist, song, genre or composer.
  • SoundHound - do you ever try to sing along with the lyrics of a song and can't quite get it? This amazing little app "listens" to the song and pops up the title, author, lyrics and just about anything else you'd like to know - then links to iTunes to download. A-maz-ing.

In Closing...

All eyes are solemnly watching the court. (Not the Supreme Court, silly - the basketball court!) That is all except for Paul Bell, our CPA firm VP, who is solemnly counting his winnings. Louisville Cardinal fan Paul got the ultimate revenge when Kansas beat Ohio State Saturday night because that meant he automatically won the basketball pool. Better luck next year to the rest of us!

pulled into another world...a
talking world...starring a soft-boiled southern-speaking financial planner and her trusty sidekick, Michelle Neiswender.

Michelle... from southern California, who everybody assumes can speak Spanish but who stares blankly when our Hispanics attempt to chat with her, not understanding a word...because she has a secret, a secret that she keeps deeply, forever buried (well, not really).

And that secret is that she's really part Filipino, not Mexican.

And now you know.

To be continued (after a few acting lessons)

Hugs, and GO BIG BLUE!!!
