Fund Find(s) of the Month:

Abstaining-from-Sin Funds
cig butts Occasionally a client will ask that I invest in funds run according to Biblical principals, which means the client prefers not to own funds with significant holdings in tobacco, alcohol, gambling, etc. This month, with the help of my talented mentor, David Snowball, I have a fund for you that not only "abstains", but also has an impressive record. How it's run, though, may cause you to blink twice.

Part II of ID Theft: How to Protect Our Children

ID theft children

Have you had time to read last month's feature article about predators who troll the Internet for our children's identities? If you are even half as outraged as we are, you're probably wondering what you can do. The solutions we give you in this month's article don't require a doctorate in computer science - just good old-fashioned common sense, discipline, and an inquiring mind.

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month: 14-Carrot Golden Temptation

Carrot Cake

Do cooked carrots render you appetite-less? Growing up, I must confess I couldn't tolerate them. Poor Mom, the only carrot-eater in our family of seven, never got to enjoy them unless she went out to eat. Would YOU want to waste a nice meal out on rabbit food?
Herbed Carrots

The Bobfather, on the other hand, loves pretty colors on his plate, especially carrots. In the early days, when I was determined to be the perfect little woman, I decided to try
them out and discovered they're not half bad. In fact, this month's recipes are now on my favorites list!

If you'd like to make friends with your family's inner carrot demons give these a try. You might even get requests for seconds!

Formerly Clients' Corner with Nick Murray

Nick Murray is a wonderful writer on investing psychology. In fact, this Kentucky Woman  thinks he's unmatched. Last month, Nick changed his policies to allow subscribers to provide his Clients' Corner essays to clients only.  Unfortunately, that means we can no no longer publish these popular essays for our newsletter subscribers. We'll continue to send out Clients' Corner to our clients. (Just a reminder to anyone flirting with the idea of becoming a client: this is just one more reason to make Milestones your home for financial planning and investing! smile)

thinking lady"Recommended Resources" is our place for monthly links to a variety of information that we use ourselves. Look for website suggestions, books, articles, and more to enhance your  experiences with Finance, Food, Fun! If you have questions you'd like us to take a stab at answering, email me or post them on Facebook and we'll reply in this column.

Your January Recommended Resources:

Our two-part series on Identity Theft of Children (above) has generated a ton of interest. The Internet affords many opportunities for deceit, including social media fraud. Just this week, bogus investment advisor Anthony Fields was arrested in Illinois for trying to sell $500 million of fake securities on LinkedIn.

Chances are, if you're reading this newsletter, you're using some kind of social media. The use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites for investing tools has increased significantly in the last two years. The SEC just published two bulletins on Social Media and Investing. Avoiding Fraud will help you know what to look for to protect yourself and your loved ones.  Understanding Your Accounts has tips to know for setting up an account on social media.

In Closing...

We've had another mystery link winner! Last month, Mary Beth Elder-Paschall found an "uncooperative" link at the very bottom of our newsletter and received a $25 Amazon gift certificate for her troubles. If you aren't checking out our links, you're missing a great chance to cash in on our (rarely) lax proofreading skills. (Naturally, we're really just checking to see who's reading through our newsletter.)

If you weren't reading the Wall Street Journal on December 5, you may have missed Johanna's discussion, Mining for Hidden Gems Among Funds, with Javier Espinoza.

Have you noticed that my picture has a different look? It is with deepest respect and gratitude that I'd like to introduce you to Texas/California photo magician, Paul Roberts. Paul specializes in real estate photography and avatars (pictures) for social media. Check out my Twitter page to view the great background he created. Perhaps most important, Paul's services are very PayPal-friendly. The work he did for us over the course of a couple of days was under $100. You can reach him by email or check out his Twitter page, @PaulBritPhoto.

The next issue will have our popular Superbowl Snacks spread, so get those potholders and mixing bowls ready to roll!

Hugs, God bless, and a quick prayer for links that work,
